St. John's vs. Hofstra vs. NYLS.. HELP?!

Post by finsftball4 » Mon Feb 22, 2010 4:31 am

hey everyone, just curious as to what some of your opinions are on the situation I am in as far as school selection goes. I live on Long Island about 15 minutes away from Hofstra and about 30 min. away from St. Johns. Commute itsnt really a big issue for me but being close to both schools does help. Hofstra and NYLS have offered me 15k a year while St. Johns is not offering me any money as far as I am aware. St John's is a school that I really liked when I visited and it seems to be hands down the best of the 3 schools. My question is, is it that much better than Hofstra and NYLS where passing up on that 45k ( over 3 years) is a smart decision. Most people i have spoken to seem to think my options coming out of St. Johns would far outweigh what would be available to me from the other 2 schools and because of this most of the feedback i have gotten has been go to St. Johns despite the full price tag. I know 15k is not much especially with the cost of those 2 schools to begin with but is it enough to be making me think otherwise about St. Johns? any advice is appreciated!

Also add Brooklyn Law at part-time full price into that equation. I should have put my app in full time there but i chose to apply there part time thinking I had a better shot there like that. I dont know if its worth Brooklyn part time over St. Johns full time though....

what kind of law do you want to do? in order of "big" law, it would go brooklyn, st johns, hofstra, new york law school.
if big law is ur goal, youre going to have to work extremely hard at all 4 of these schools and youre gonna need to network big time.

if that isnt your goal, but pub interest is/gov etc etc, go where the money is.

as far as part time versus full time, thats your preference.

is a retake possible to up your LSAT?

big law would always be nice but i knew going into this that id have to work very hard to achieve any shot at that. I got a 161 on the LSAT and was pretty happy with that. the problem for me was my undergraduate grades were not good for personal reasons which i did explain in my addendum. i am going to be attenting school in the fall one way or another, I am just trying to decide brooklyn part time vs st johns full time. I figured id ask about hofstra and NYLS also since they gave me some $$$$$

ANYONE?!?!?!?!?!?! also does anyone know how well contacting a school that you have been accepted to and asking them for money works? i want to tell St. Johns that the only thing holding me back is that other schools offered me some money while they did not offer anything and it would be much easier to commit if i had even a little money to help....

Negotiating for scholarship consideration has been done successfully by quite a few people on TLS. Here's one post about it

They're almost the same in ranking, St. Johns is a little higher. I would say go with the scholly! Or write a letter to St. Johns using your Hofstra scholly and try to get some money out of them- I've heard that this works.

Forget NYLS and go with the $ at Hofstra. Hofstra and St. John's aren't that much different. I think this has been done before, but here's how I'd breakdown the NYC metro area schools.

Columbia/NYU/Cornell > Fordham > Cardozo/Brooklyn > St.John's/Hofstra > CUNY > NYLS/Touro
