Example: slot machine. You pull the slot 100 times, and only 3 or 4 times do you win any real money. But those 3 or 4 times keep you pressing that button. It is what causes the addiction. We become addicted to the feeling of winning, which is the motivation for all of the losing.
Example 2: Refreshing my App Status checkers. I only get rewarded once a day or so, but I waste hours pressing that button for such a small reward.
I'm becoming very inefficient.

Re: Variable response reward / law school admissions
I was speaking hyperbolically. I'm just checking several times a day, and constantly checking my email. Checking on the snail mail minutes after the dude leaves.
I've got a lot riding on what happens in the next couple months (obviously.) I'm also taking 21 credits and I work, so I could use less distraction. I just need an acceptance from somewhere I would be excited about going, then I can chill a bit.
