The school has no right to contact your employer unless you put them down as a reference, which I'm sure you didn't. Relax.

What if you list the phone number next to the business name on the resume? Could/would they contact the business even if you didn't specifically list the business as a reference?

I taught for a year out of undergrad and found the whole situation to be pretty terrible.

I wouldn't worry about it affecting your applications though. I haven't had any problems like that so far.
