is this a dumb ideea?

Post by pattymac » Tue Jan 26, 2010 1:59 am

Hey guys,
My GPA is on the low side...should I enroll in some community college classes and get straight A's? They would go on my LSDAS GPA if I haven't graduated undergrad yet, correct?

Yes, the grades would count. What's your GPA? Going from a 2.4 to a 2.6 might not make a big difference, but going from 2.9 to 3.1 would be HUGE.

*sigh* Don't remind me, my fall grades just got updated to LSAC, bumped my GPA from a 3.56 to 3.59. Damnit.

Anyway, go for it, OP. Nothing wrong with padding that GPA, just make sure you come through.

Well, I guess I didn't mean dumb as much as I meant plausible, lol.

I figure I can get straight A's, yeah. My buddy went to the college and got straight A's with no studying (albeit his words, not mine) and struggled at my school. It would be incredibly cheap and I could just take some electives "out of interest", right? I could probably take some crim and philosophy classes that I'm probably qualified to teach...lol. I'm Canadian btw.

my school GPA is a 2.8, my lsdas is like a 2.5. I think I'm gunna land three more A's to finnish my undergrad, I think I could land 5 at that college and probably do them online as well. It would cost me 1200 bucks.

I'm disappointed. The misspelled and uncapitalized title made me hope I would see something truly dumb in here. Instead I'm greeted by something that seems potentially sound and intelligent. I want a refund.

since subtlety didn't work...I think it's a dumb idea to not edit the title.

It's a slightly dumb idea, and I'll tell you why: you should be looking for community colleges that give A+'s.

You may need a full year of advanced study, if your college will allow it. 2.8 to 3.1 or even 3.2 would be fantastic. But you have to take some challenging classes (adcoms know gut-hunters when they see them), and they should be mostly upper-level. May I suggest Accounting (intro ok), Econ (Micro and Macro), Shakespeare (dense language good prep for LSAT and law school), Advanced English/Writing/Lit, Statistics, Calculus, History, Classics, Musicology, a hard science or two, and a research course? A course requiring a lengthy research paper would be icing on the cake. I would only take the Econ and Accounting classes at CC (maybe the Shakespeare), the rest should be at a 4-yr college/university.

I wish I had had this much foresight in undergrad. Just .2 more on my GPA would make a world of difference. Go for it!

0.2 is a huge GPA difference that's unlikely to be made up by CC classes unless your GPA was super low to begin with. For example, you would need 60 A's to raise 120 credits of 3.4 to 3.6. Even if you had a 3.0, you'd need 30 A's to make up 0.2.

Okay, update on my "dumb" idea!

I talked to a friend, heres how it works. This college I'm talking about doesn't give A+'s BUT anything over 80% is a 4.0 and they ONLY pump out the letter grade, not the percentage. The courses are about 200-250 bucks each. So if my GPA is 2.6 and I cranked out 10 4.0's, would it make a drastic difference?

Another bonus was that they offer various "certifications" in certain things, and many of them had to do with business...I've got the year off next year. I'd imagine I could take these classes in the summer (online even) and get a certificate and "try" to find a decent job with it for the time being. That way it won't look as though I tried to just pump up my GPA?

Yes, 10 4.0s would make a huge difference, assuming you can do it.

They're not going to look into it enough to see that you were GPA-pumping.

Amoral? Yes. Will it help you? Sadly, yes.

Thanks Ben J...I agree BUT I'm going to obviously make it constructive. I don't think taking some extra courses out of interest or to hone some personal skills over the summer is the worst thing one could do, even if it helps me in the long run ;).

I'm unfamiliar with how this works...Does anyone know what 10 credits of 4.0 would do for my average if its 2.6 right now? That 2.6 is over 40 credits with 3 remaining which I'm certain I should land at least an A- in all three..

Assuming you apply after graduation: (120*2.6+3*10*4)/150 = 2.88, so that's a +0.26 boost for about $2000-$2500. If you apply as a senior, you'd get a 2.95. But like I said earlier, the much smarter way would be to find online CC classes that give A+. Trust me, they exist...

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
