Yes snail mail = postal service.
I know how it feels to be OCD about these applications. I have been checking both religiously. I've heard some change the checker first some email it to you first.
I keep telling myself it doesn't matter if I find out right when it happens, it is what it is... Can't actually convince myself of that though.
