What other schools are you applying to?

So I'm noticing this question popping up a lot on applications... how many should I list? I'm guessing an incomplete list is a good idea especially for extreme backup schools... it would look bad to list all schools ranked higher than them correct?

I've been wondering the same thing. Is there any advantage (or reason at all) to list the others schools you're applying to? And what's the strategy for doing so?
