diversity statement reach?

Post by Eric_Arthur_Blair » Mon Jan 04, 2010 11:38 pm

Should I write a "socioeconomic" diversity statement related to my father's prolonged unemployment, my parents divorce, my financial independence and "lower middle" class standing? Is that waaaaaay too much of a reach or legitimate?

Thanks!

"lower middle class" is still middle class, divorce is becoming more common than staying together, and unemployment happens to everyone at some point. You're not sounding that diverse.

Agree with vanwinkle, doesn't sound helpful and could come across as whiny/entitled. The diversity statement is not necessary and usually not helpful unless you're a URM anyway.

Yeah thats what I thought, but I thought I'd get some feedback anyways. You never know what helps.
