No More Mail!

Post by cardinal08 » Mon Jan 04, 2010 8:15 pm

Does anyone know how to get schools to stop sending mail to my home? For one thing, I am overseas, so I don't get any of it. For another, I marked LGBT status on the CRS, not realizing that schools would all send me info about their OUTLaw programs. I am not, in fact, out to my parents, so this has been quite awkward when they open my mail for me. I removed the status on the LSAC Web site, but I fear it's too late. Not that they would care, but I'd rather not have my sexuality revealed to my parents by some law school in Nebraska . . .

Nope, not a troll. My family isn't conservative, so it's not the end of the world, but still something I'd like to avoid . . . anyone know the answer?

Perhaps use it as an opportunity to broach the subject :D

As for whether it'll help, I'd imagine no new schools will think of you as LGBT. But as for those schools that have already requested your info before you changed...

I can just picture the scene where your parents recieve your mail and find out.

"Why, son, why?!??!"

"Someone told me that if I checked the 'gay' box on the form I'd get to apply to schools for free. Saved me about a thousand bucks."

"... That's my boy."

I think your best bet for an immediate answer would be to forward your mail, maybe to a PO Box. It would probably be difficult to do from overseas, though, never tried.

Update: Yes, they do continue to send mail well after you uncheck the box. My parents opened a letter from GW Law that not only mentioned that DC is the "7th gayest city in the U.S." (what the hell?), but also that I had checked the LGBT box. Thanks for reminding me, GW! Oh well, guess it had to happen sometime.

I feel for your plight, but at the same time, this is pretty funny. Straight out of Seinfeld, or something.

this is a pretty awesome story like everyone else says....if u dont feel comfortable about it, just ignore it...your parents probably arent experts of applying to law schools. The schools can be sending this stuff to all of us for all they know. If you are comfortable just use this as an ice breaker to come out.

URM or NTA??? Intuition says you're gay. I was also surprised at the volume of law school junk mail that i have received. I feel the worst for the waste of paper. In fact , that was an lsat LR question.... remember?

No, not URM or NTA. I think I'll probably just mention it casually like, "I guess cat's out of the bag," or something.

Standing back from my own stress, I can see how it's funny which is why I posted it. If I was that paranoid I wouldn't have checked the box in the first place. But damn you GW anyway for being so tactless as to provide a ranking of how "gay" your city is - so asinine.

You let your parents open your mail? Maybe I'm just super private, but I'd be pissed if my parents opened my mail without my permission. I mean, no, I'm not hiding anything, but it's addressed to me...not them!

Other than that, "7th gayest city in america" brought the lols. Only 7th, though...pshh. Other than San Francisco, who else would out-gay DC?
