Re: TLS improvements in 2010 - what would you like
Some ideas:
Given TLS' market power, (well ... sufficient to get interviews from Deans) it might be time to come up with an alternative to USNWR for law school data (not rankings). What do students want to know, but can't get from USNWR?
A single source for ....
- Unfudged salary data.
- % of 2Ls with paid summer positions
- % of 2Ls participating in OCI who get offers
- OCI Lists
This is just off the top of my head. I'm sure someone can come up with a better list.
This dataquest could be crwodsourced, with candidates leveraging acceptance to extract unvarnished data from schools, or something.
Now that the JD = $Dollaz$ equation has taken a bit of a beating, there's a real market for accurate and meaningful information. TLS could fill it, but it would require a level of coordination that might be unrealistic for a web forum. But hey, why not think big?

I would like to see more information in the financial aid section. Maybe a step by step process for securing funding for legal education during this step by step description possibly list a time frame of when this should be commenced? Differences between the types of aid and whether it builds interest while in school, waits until after. What types of aid don't need to be paid back...
That would help me and I am sure at least a few others out..

Maybe have a person send everyone in the Class of 20XX forums a PM for a survey. School, Rank, Employment, etc. This way I bet the survey won't be as skewed if it were taken publicly on the forum. Also, only the mod would know who sent what, the results can be posted anonymously, AKA: X people at tier 1 school reported xxx.Space_Cowboy wrote:Some ideas:

Without it I would ignore anyone with less than 50 posts as being flame.jayzon wrote:Honestly, if it weren't for the "See User's Posts" option, things would be very different. It is:
1. the best way of trollspotting

3. the best way to be sure that the person sending you a message isn't a total creeper, or some trolling AdComm

Re: TLS improvements in 2010 - what would you like
Improved search function accomplishes this at lower cost.oppotomus wrote:I apologize if this has already been said, but I think it would be great to have profiles on things other than just the schools. There are a number of common themes that spread over threads that I think would be useful to have if someone cleaned them up and merged them.
As an example, there is very little information on the Darrow in the MI profile, but past threads have unearthed things that help quite a lot. A Darrow profile could consolidate all the experiences shared by past posters and provide bullets like: "most people that receive an invite will receive at least a half scholarship" etc. Maybe it doesn't have to be a Darrow profile; rather, it could be a "Merit-based scholarship" profle...
Year after year the same questions pop up. I think they can be identified and answered using TLS responses.
Just a thought - maybe a time consuming, expensive one.

+1. This would be extremely helpful.JessicaTiger wrote:I'm very much in favor of a marketplace not only for old LSAT prep materials, but also for used hornbooks, E&E books, primers, outlines, etc.

+1, if you are scared of creepers, you shouldn't post things on the internet that you don't want potentially millions of people to know about you.paratactical wrote:The "View User Posts" button isn't for creepers. Creepers know better ways to find out more things about you than you'd like to think and they can do it without the button. There are other ways for me to get lists of all your TLS posts, but because I'm not a stalker/creeper, I don't care to waste my time to do so. Anyone who is a real creeper has other methods for figuring out who you are.ntzsch wrote: -1 to this.
1. Maybe, still dont think it is worth the creep factor. And I really dont think trolldom as gone down appreciably as a result.
2. if the person doesn;t put stats in profile, they might not want you to know. they might tell you if you asked. they might not want you lurking through their posts. a few posts does not give much away if you are trying to remain anonymous, but after 1000...
3. when have you found someone to be a Adcomm by going through post history, the one or two i know have explicit names and do not make troll like posts? You are avoiding creepers by creeping through my post?

As mentioned a few times before, that is not the only advantage.ntzsch wrote:i mean, i am not that scared. i would just rather not have a log of all my posts in the same place for anyone to go through.Inygma wrote:+1, if you are scared of creepers, you shouldn't post things on the internet that you don't want potentially millions of people to know about you.paratactical wrote:The "View User Posts" button isn't for creepers. the only advantage to that function is to avoid trolldom. but if i wanted to troll. i would just create another name.
Finding other meaningful posts by people who write respected things on here is an advantage, finding peoples stats so you don't have to ask them in every thread is an advantage, etc.

Re: TLS improvements in 2010 - what would you like
I've really enjoyed the Legal Employment forum, and I think it would be helpful if TLS added some articles about the job search process and so forth. I'm not sure if firm profiles are necessary, since most of us will just use NALP, but articles on how to get summer jobs as a 1L/2L or how to do well in OCI would be useful for current students. In that vein, it would also be useful if there were sample resumes and cover letters posted somewhere on the site, similar to the diversity statements posted currently.

Re: TLS improvements in 2010 - what would you like
What about a place, such as a "Hall of Fame" that certain posts can be voted into. This would allow such things as transfer process/advice (PKS comes to mind), success in law school (xero comes to mind), what it is like to be xxxx (there is a "prosecutor in a major market taking questions" thread somewhere), etc.
This could be done every 3-6 months or so. If a post receives xxxx amount of votes it should go to the hall of fame or something?

Searching google for "site:www.top-law-schools.com username" would yield pretty much the same results anyway.ntzsch wrote:Inygma wrote:+1, if you are scared of creepers, you shouldn't post things on the internet that you don't want potentially millions of people to know about you.paratactical wrote:The "View User Posts" button isn't for creepers. An organized way for addressing questions about specific test questions. I think a forum dedicated just to that would quickly become a way to find great explanations to virtually every question.
For example, have a forum dedicated to
"LSAT Question Solutions"
Have a folder for each PT
Makes it wonderfully easy to benefit from the explanations of others without having to create a new thread about the same question again and again.
