I can't remember when, if ever, they had numbers this bad.

This drop is amazing... I am desperately waiting to see what happened to WUSTL and GW now.

I'm waiting on UT-Austin's numbers, since it's one of my top choices as of now.

Yeah, law school used to be not quite as much of a numbers game. USNWR changed all that, on both the school side and the applicant side. Since 1993 (the baseline year of the 180 scale), T14 medians are up a lot, T1 medians are up marginally, and everyone else's medians are down. Schools were once black boxes and it was essentially impossible to determine "how good" at school was, which is why people used to just go to their regional schools at higher rates than they do now. I mean, T14 has always been T14 (that term has been around since at least the '60s), but the de-regionalization of law schools gave T14 a new sort of aura as a once-acceptable regionals became verboten as USNWR started ranking more and more schools.jingosaur wrote:@Mono, not sure if you know this, but were the stats so much lower before because there were fewer candidates with good scores or because law schools just didn't care as much about the LSAT?
At the same time, USNWR, being a self-fulfilling prophecy, started the numbers arms race as significantly more emphasis was placed on medians. Numbers became significant to the point where they now explain the overwhelming majority of variation in admissions decision. Basically, T14 medians are higher because the 170+ scorers are much more condensed in those schools than they would've been previously.

Just...wow.
UMN was one of my top choices, but no fee waiver (14/15 of my other top choices granted me a waiver) combined just a decent shot of admission at sticker caused me to write it off. But now, being above the GPA median and just 1 point below the LSAT median, my chances are looking pretty damn good.
I love the Twin Cities and Minnesota, and I'd love to return to my alma mater for law school. This is awesome news for me.

There hasn't been much discussion of changes to the rankings after these drops in admission stats. Do you foresee and major changes in the too 25. Maybe Penn moves up a bit with CCN.

I think there's a good chance that Chicago may knock Columbia down to #5 next year, instead of being tied for #4. Of course, the year after that Chicago will no longer be benefiting from the Ruby boost so who knows then.

If chi keeps the 171, its very possible. If they only hit 170 then probably stay ties.
I have a bad feeling its gonna hold. Heads may roll around here for damning "Top 4" even temporarily for the first time in .. A shitload of years.

Everyone here at UMN is livid about the medians. I should have waited another cycle. With a 168/3.4 I would have probably gotten a full ride. FML. We're predicting a 5-10 place drop in the rankings. A 156 25th percentile is a joke.
And FTR they did let in a much bigger 1L class. Before this year the strategy was to let in fewer students as 1Ls but then let in a ton of transfers to get their $$. My class (2015) has about 50 transfers.

Here comes the Cafaro! I don't know how many Rubies they awarded each year, but I think it was more than 3.

I think there were about 20 Rubies per year, and there wasn't a financial need component for it.Vincent wrote:http://www.law.uchicago.edu/news/jdjour ... holarshipsjbagelboy wrote:Ughheythatslife wrote:I think there's a good chance that Chicago may knock Columbia down to #5 next year, instead of being tied for #4.
