As I understand things after living here and speaking with attorneys et al., Reputationally you have UofC/NU, then Kent, then Loyola, then DePaul, then pretty far down the road past DePaul, John Marshall.

Chicagoans, does that sound about right?

Job-wise in Chicago, it's UofC, NU, then bust. I wouldn't go to any school below NU if your plan was to work in Chicago. Even if you get a full scholarship somewhere else, it's going to be a waste of time.

If you don't get into one of those schools you risk ending up like that guy from the bachelor - a JD graduate working as a male stripper because he attended IIT in Chicago.

If by "well," you mean they have a 25% chance of a decent outcome (maybe 35% at Michigan, but probably only 20% at UIUC), than sure, they place well.

The job market in Chicago is awful...possibly the worst in the country. There's a lot of people even from NU and UofC law schools toiling away at unpaid "fellowships," which will ultimately result in those people leaving law for some compliance position paying $45K/year. Thank god for LRAP, I guess.

Depends where you're coming from, Chicago is arguably the easiest market to get from HLS. See triptrips comments here:

What do you suggest they do? Practice an even more extreme form of AA?

Have you worked in the real world? They are everywhere. The people on TLS are the minority, trust me.

Two classmates sent out applications last year. One is now going to American (with ~20% scholarship), despite my best efforts. The other turned down Barry at near the last minute. Its terrifying how far the delusional "all you need is a JD and drive."

American is doing just fine. Five years ago their student body was 10% larger but sticker tuition was 20% lower. They still give out very little "scholarship" money, so their total revenue from tuition has actually gone up. Now in theory it's a problem that their LSAT has cratered, because that could supposedly hurt their employment stats, but their employment stats were terrible when their LSAT was 163. There will always be plenty of people willing to borrow $75K per year in taxpayer money to live in DC while pursuing a career in international environmental human rights law.
