I know she was fairly popular for personal statements when I was applying a few years ago. She wrote the TLS guide on the subject.

I called Mike Spivey just for a second opinion on my personal statement (my college advisor gave the first opinion), and I really don't think Spivey is into gouging applicants / putting us in more debt before law school / giving sales pitches... He read my essay and gave me prompt feedback that was in line with the first opinion I got, and then didn't attempt to get me to use Spivey because he could see that I already had a solid, free advisor. My friend had a similar experience when she called for advice on whether she should reapply to law school when she didn't get into her dream school and didn't get money. He gave her solid, FREE advice. really nice guy -- I think Spivey is trustworthy and worth calling
