I know Columbia is big on diversity, but how many African-Americans, particularly males, would you say are students there? You can comment on your class only (2Ls) if that's better.

I'd look at the statistics CLS puts out to find the total # of african americans, but I'd guess the ratio of female to male AAs is 5:2 or so, maybe even 3:1. Or at least it seems that way.

How does it seem for those not interested in BigLaw at least not right away?

I'm not really sure what this means. If you mean that now you're not interested in BigLaw but may be by 2L OCI, then I think there are plenty of people like you. Many people realize that BigLaw (whether true or not) indicates you did well and got good training, and pays off your loans. But tons of people plan to do PI and seem to be doing well.

If you mean that you want to work in gov or PI before moving to BigLaw, that's not a well worn path. If you ever plan on doing BigLaw, get a 2L summer position.

Hmm I really am shooting for a clerkship, and failing that, looking at midsized litigation heavy firms---I have seen and worked in firms about 50-100 and 200-300, are these usually considered "BigLaw" when it comes to OCI, or does everyone who does well shoot for Skadden type firms...would it make sense to go to Columbia if I get in or would you say I should just move down the ladder and take the money?

It was discussed in one of my classes last year. (Don't want to say which for fear of outing self.) Also, take a look through the actual facebook for confirmation.

It makes sense, actually. Any AA male with even reasonably-ballpark numbers got into HYS. And AA females traditionally are much more academically successful than their male counterparts, so there was bound to be more women than men.

That does make sense. We're already outnumbered by AA women by the time we even enter college as undergrads. I expected there to be more AA women, and I suppose I'm not shocked by that number. That's why I asked the question here on TLS; I wanted a personal observation. The ABA data only tells you so much and, to be honest, I've thought for a long time that schools reported fudged numbers for AA male enrollment.

Do you have any sense of how many students seek out and/ or are successful in pursuing "non-traditional" jobs out of CLS (e.g. management consulting or something that isn't a traditional firm lawyer)? I would think more students might pursue these avenues given the depression in firm hiring, but I'd guess no alternate route would be a well worn path that many take. If you have any insight, what are the most common "other" jobs? Thanks!

I come from a more rural area, and I was wondering how urban is Columbia?
Like is there a real lack of open areas? or is it a concrete jungle like I assume what most of NYC is?
for the record, haven't ever been to NY or larger east coast cities.
