Haha, they can organize depositions, prepare for the exhibits, assist with prep and research for closing arguments, yes. Among many other things. And I believe all of that would be included in "assisting"MTal wrote: So a para can take depositions, cross-examine witnesses, and make closing arguments?? I did a lot of negotiating as a claim agent (i didn't work for an insurance company). Much of it was with other non-attorneys. Cases up to $100k, and often as law suits.
But I get what you're saying, even if the job is available to non-attorneys, there's a pretty good chance an unemployeed attorney might take that job.

In the latter, I get a steady paycheck plus 2 licenses (series 7+and 63) ALL paid for (including study time) by my sponsoring company. Contrast this with the former where I would literally go tens of thousands of dollars into debt (pretty cheap for law actually) +bar exam fees (more loans again) all for the small chance of ever becoming a lawyer.Desert Fox wrote:Quitting law school to get into finance seems like frying pan to fire scenario to me.

How many clerk postions have you had? How many legal jobs have you applied for while you were a 1L? How many firms have you worked for? How many lawyers and judges do you know? But your still an expert on how hiring works in a professon your where never really in and are not in now?MTal wrote:Apart from OCI which is only availabe to the top 10 % of students at most schools, could you please point us to the magical legal database of plush lawyer jobs, with dozens of postings for every city? The fact is that if you haven't secured a job through OCI or a judicial clerkship, C-list is what you're stuck with.Matthies wrote:Protip - use craigslist to find: used furniture, a roommate, or a Philippino she male. Don’t use Craigslist to find a legal job.
Ugh this, not understanding how people find jobs in the legal world, is the main reason law students have such a hard time finding decent jobs if they strike out from OCI. The single best way to find a job is knowing people in the legal community who can refer you for positions that are not even advertised yet.
If law students would get their asses out of the law school, join the bar association invest in meeting some lawyers and judges before they graduate they would not have to resort to replying to craigslist want ads. But they don’t. They put all their eggs in the OCI basket then act shocked when they have no job, no contacts and no hope after law school. Who you know beats everything else.
Additionally, in my market the bar association runs a job lsitever, 2-3 new attorney jobs and recently 4-5 paralegal jobs get posted each week. Why would they post jobs on the bar associations website? I have no idea, maybe its because they hope other lawyers might not recommend crap and they don’t have to resort putting out a news paper add and getting 500 resumes for one position. Of course you have to be a member of the local bar association, which is free for students, but surprisingly, again most law students don’t even join.
There are jobs out there, the better jobs get taken by the proactive applicants and lesser jobs get taken by the re-active applicants waiting for someone to post on Craigslist a job so 1000 people can apply for it.
How do you think lawyers lateral? They wait for a want add on cragislist sayi ng LATERAL WANTED. Or maybe they ask people they know, other lawyers and stuff, if they know of anything. I know, its crazy to ask people, like other lawyers and stuff, if there are any jobs out there when you can rely on Craigslist. But people do crazy things.

Chill everyone.. it's obviously a JOKE!MTal wrote:$8/hour position for an ADMITTED attorney in NY...! Honestly, I will just let this ad speak for itself.

Edit: I doubt you could survive on this "salary" in NY debt free...now add in a 6 figure law school loan and you've got the makings of a very sad situation.
Edit 2: Changed the thread title.

I have about as much experience PRACTICING law as you do. The fact is that you've spent 10+ posts on splitting hairs about whether this ad is for an attorney or a paralegal, when the ad clearly says in plain and unambiguous writing that they're looking for an ADMITTED ATTORNEY as well as a paralegal. Now how about addressing the substance of THAT, rather than what kind of para bitchwork can overlap with what an attorney does.Kohinoor wrote:We're doing both. Unless you've worked as a paralegal, you have far less experience with the practice of law than I do. We spent that time splitting hairs because you were arrogantly making authoritative sounding statements that were completely baseless. In your first two posts you were just generally insulting, then in your third you stepped into bizarro world and called Pear clueless when you don't know anything about anything.MTal wrote:I have about as much experience PRACTICING law as you do. Most paralegals with one year experience will have done more actual legal type work in that year than most biglaw first year associates will in the same 12 months. Lawyers write stuff, legal secretaries make sure it looks good and paralegals makes sure it’s right before they turn it in with your signature on it.MTal wrote:I have about as much experience PRACTICING law as you do.Kohinoor wrote:We're doing both. I have a high paying job in IT. Been in the profession for 12 yrs. Hope 2 attend a top tier ls with an excellent cs. Dept. 4 a dual degree in either infoscience or cs (Ms or phd)... focusing on getting into jd program first. I know I can make enough in IT 2 both offset costs during school and payback loans. Maybe want 2 be general counsel at big IT company... maybe do Ip from. A policy standpoint. When done with ls, if I can't get a job then its global financial Armageddon and we're all fcked.
