Wow... solo_lawyer hasn't been banned by TLS mods yet. I'd have lost that bet.

This whole OCI Fail thing is getting way overhyped at this point.
Back in August it was "Holy Shit, we all thought we were gonna be okay, but apparently not." People start crying because they expected 10+ callbacks w/ their median grades, and only got 1-3. Understandable, it was a lot worse than anyone was really predicting.

Now that callbacks are mostly over, people who struck out are trying to find other ways to fill that summer and making alt career plans... But it seems that everyone forgot that even if 1/3 people who wanted biglaw aren't getting it, 2/3 people still got in, ITE. I don't know what people's opportunity costs are, but a healthy shot at 160k a year starting career is pretty good regardless, especially ITE. There are very very very few professions where you'd have a shot at making anywhere near the $ or lay prestige that law school still offers, much less both. That's not to mention the large # of people who would value a top notch legal education and a career in law in and of itself regardless.

Everyone is retarded? Really? A small minority of people at these schools who didn't fully think through the whole "why law" question, didn't do well academically in LS, and didn't interview well... perhaps. Everyone else is still relatively okay even ITE. Besides, remember how 80% of your classmates walked in saying they wanted PI? Well, now they have no choice other than to follow their dreams to LRAP land. ITE ftw.

i tend to agree with this. granted, many t14ers were blindsided by ITE and didn't get what they signed up for -- a biglaw job. the ONLY people who should be complaining are those @ t14 median (and maybe lesser schools like vandy/ucla/texas). nobody else should have gone to law school expecting anything other than an outside chance at 160k.

Don't be a law school lemming...

Did you know that "Below school No. 26 (Emory), a graduate has a less than one in five probability of starting his or her career at a large law firm"?

Everyone who is thinking of applying should read this article:

<20% is actually higher than what I thought...

EDIT

Oh, this was written in April of 2008. Nevermind.

Hey, thanks. That really puts things into perspective for me.

Cheers.

Edit: Shameless Emory trolling BTW.

Attending Emory gives you a 20% chance of being sodomized by chocolate.

I'd gladly give up $160k job to have a 20% chance of getting sodomized by anything at this point. I’m so lonely

Kidding aside...the sad thing is that things are worse than that now. Blargh.

In all fairness to the poster, the current economic crises has only served to exacerbate what was an already dismal legal market. So I would be a little more concerned now than I was in April of 08', just my two cents.

Agreed hmar78.

Hopefully this article helps potential applicants realize that even in a good economy it's a tough market, and there are no guarantees. That debt is a monster.
