UT Law - 9/9/09

Interestingly, it seems to only apply if your application is in before Nov. 1.

I think my life on fee waivers is done. The only ones that I could receive now that would make me apply to schools I'm not already applying to are Penn and Georgetown.

Went to pitch the envelope from Michigan and found the fee waiver inside, in a separate letter. Doh! Glad I didn't email them asking for one, at least.

I requested one from Cardozo and got this email back:
Thank you for your email and interest in Cardozo School of Law.
Financial Need Fee Waiver:
Applicants must submit a written request with the application to obtain a
waiver of the $70 application fee for financial hardship. The request
should be accompanied by one of the following: (a) a copy of your most
recent income tax return, (b) a copy of an approved fee waiver from the
Law School Admission Council, or (c) a letter from your undergraduate
financial aid office describing the financial aid you are receiving or
received while you attended. Once we receive your documents you will
receive an email response.

Merit Based Fee waivers:
Applicants must submit a written request with the application to obtain a
waiver of the $70 application fee based on Merit. Please include your GPA,
college or university attended and latest LSAT score and date. Once we
receive your documents you will receive an email response.
Am I reading this right? They want me to apply for a fee waiver... as I apply? Am I not then essentially applying for a refund?

It seems likely that you are. "A written request with the application..." huh? That's new (to me anyway).

The real question is why are you applying to Cardozo with your phenomenal LSAT score?

That's odd, because I sent them an e-mail and got this response:

Hello,
Thank you for your email. We will begin to grant fee waivers after
September 7th, Labor Day for 2010 terms. You will then receive an email
confirmation whether or not you were granted a fee waiver from Cardozo
School of Law. Please contact us with any further questions.
Thank you.

Does anyone know if UCLA just posted their hidden fee waivers yesterday or today? I ask because I applied early yesterday morning and didn't have a fee waiver and yet people with numbers similar to mine seem to be getting them today, despite no mention of a UCLA fee waiver before today.

I suppose my question boils down to: did anyone who applied to UCLA (or checked for a hidden fee waiver) before yesterday/early yesterday have a fee waiver?

It'd be nice to get that $75 back, but even if I don't I'd be interested to see if they decided my numbers weren't good enough for a waiver.

 Well, I was considering applying because I want NYC, and I thought there might be a chance that my uncompleted graduate degree and sub-summa GPA could shut me out of my top choices. Of course, the Cardozo scenario also involves Fordham rejecting me, so yeah, you guys are probably right... not being entirely realistic. (You'll be happy to know I've at least knocked Temple off my list. Baby steps.)

I'm also not sure how I feel about this "apply for a fee waiver after paying said fee" thing. I guess the school has every right to deter insincere applicants, but at the same time, I think there is at least some overlap between "I might go to this school if admitted and would be happy to do so" and "I don't know if I can spare $70 that I might not get back to apply to this school."

In other news, BU and GWU waived promptly on request.

That is weird, though. Didn't GWU give people two different stories, too?

Yes, they explicitly told me they didn't offer merit based fee waivers.

wow wtf. this means they straight up lied out their asses to me. i was 100% told they discontinued giving merit-based waivers a few years ago.

edit: sorry, looked again and i totally misread the email. they told me they stopped accepting requests for waivers, not that they stopped giving them out altogether
