Because a large percentage of these students do clerkships, public interest, etc. They all want to be the next Supreme Court Justice or POTUS. They pass up on big law so that they can advance their career in prestigious government jobs. That is also why Harvard and Stanford are low on the list, same deal.

The princeton thing is always amusing to me. I've had ~3? people ask me if I applied to Princeton. The first time I thought it was a joke, then I realized that pop-culture just made everyone think Princeton has a great law school. Bizarre conversation every time.

I just fell in a wikipedia rabbit hole.

Fun facts:

Princeton had a law school from 1847 until 1852.

Sonia Sotomayor has an honorary doctor of law from Princeton. So no law school, but they're still handing out law degrees.

In the last 50 years, the number of students to graduate from Yale Law School: Approximately 10,000
In the last 50 years, the number of YLS grads who were appointed to SCOTUS or elected President: 4

In other words, a student entering YLS has a .04% chance at achieving the desired outcome. A student entering Cooley in the hopes of landing big law has a better chance of success, by orders of magnitude.

Can someone please explain to me why YLS is ranked #1? It's basically a prestigious scam.

Iowa has a 89.1% bar passage rate and only 5.5% of its students unemployed according to its ABA employment report. Meanwhile, Notre Dame, which it shares its ranking with, has a 84.5% bar passage rate and 12.3% of its students are unemployed. Iowa's better placement statistics probably make up for its lagging LSAT median (161) and median GPA (3.61). Also, two other stats probably help bridge the gap. First, Iowa's law library is huge (I want to say its only smaller than Harvard's in size of collection), which accounts for like 0.5% of the rankings. Second, Iowa's student faculty is 8.7:1 according to US News, which puts it at one of the smallest in the country.

This is like the 3rd post questioning Iowa's placement, and I have no clue why. It's pretty easy to explain.

Iowa is a solid regional school. It has no business being in the T20 tbh.

Would actually be pretty interested in what the stat looks like if you included all Governors, U.S. Reps, Senators, Mayors, and District/COA Judges.

+1 I know this isn't probably top of mind for everyone but any insight would be super appreciated.

I grew up in the DC area and William & Mary had a really good rep overall so I'm honestly surprised to see it fall so far behind GW and W&L.

W&M is laying low for a couple of cycles in order to save up resources for a serious run at the T25. It's kind of like when a football team accepts a 2-14 season in order to improve draft position and thus increase its chances of success in future years.

Yeah my UG didn't have any doctorate programs but they still handed out honorary doctorate degrees to commencement speakers. Always thought that was kind of stupid.

I wish MIT had a Law School. I'm sure it'd be #1 for IP. And if they added a med school you could go JD/MD/PhD and get into the expanding field of Rocket Surgery Malpractice Litigation.
