I'm really interested in what it is that those of you who despise your job so much do on a daily basis. It's none of my business, but it could be educational in the sense that I'd tell others to avoid these sort of places/jobs. Do share.

I'm a legal assistant at a personal injury/family law firm. I am the only one. I have no training and am constantly berated for not being able to read everyone's mind. My bosses treat their business like their own personal ATMs; they are husband and wife. I don't mind the actual work, but these people treat everyone horribly. It's not until I worked for them that I realized just how much of an impact your boss and coworkers can have on job satisfaction.

If you're ever considering working at a small business, you really, really need to be sure that the people who work there aren't total jackasses first, because unlike working for a large company, you won't have anyone to commiserate with and no way of addressing abuses.

thanks, i think it's a good one myself! i can't wait to challenge myself in different kinds of ways (catching waves, backpacking 20 miles per day, learning a language, etc). you don't think you could take the summer off, too? i have no savings and hardly any assets, so i'm basically selling the only thing i have of value.

If it makes you feel better, I think we are job-twins. I'm a legal assistant/paralegal/investigator (small firm thing...) at a criminal/family law firm, have no training, and am also supposed to read everyone's mind for my own "job security" (a boss actually told me this). We have two partners, one male, one female, who most assuredly are sleeping together, otherwise there is no way the man would put up with her. As shown in my other posts...she is Crazy.

And I don't know when I'm going to quit my job. It is actually a fun game to see how long I can stay here without slapping someone.

My firm is paying for me to go and work in the Hong Kong office beginning in March until I start law school. I'm probably going to stay through till mid August to make the most of my experience working abroad in Asia!

My prick of a boss treats me like I dropped out of middle school.
It's good to know that in three years, I'll make more money than him.
Happier, too, since he sleeps in his office after work instead of going home to his family. Loser.

i dont even hate my job; i just want to quit so i can be a lazy bum. im probably gonna work untill the bitter end though (beginning of august) because i get paid too much to justify quitting, which will result in me being miserable, but with an extra couple thousand in my pocket. sometimes i wonder if im making a mistake by going to law school and abandoning my industry...

Also, note to all on the board: Treat your legal assistants and paralegals well, for they know exactly what you are doing and will be sorely tempted to report your sorry ass to the bar if you f up. Or at the very least, they can accidentally make really embarrassing typos.

Seriously, the only thing that's keeping me from doing that is the knowledge that the receptionist and office assistant really, really need this job.

I'm a legal assistant in a small firm (well, it's actually a satellite office of a big firm, so occassionally there are ten other attorneys down here and just me to help them out) but my boss is probably the nicest man I have ever met, so it's okay. He went to a pretty crappy law school because he went part time while working as a cop and he's not the most intellectual, but he treats me very well and I have very few complaints. When I got into law school he was really impressed and had started giving me a lot more interesting legal research and starts a lot of sentences with, "When you're in law school."

HOWEVER. My first job out of college I thought was going to be the best job in the entire world. My supervisor there, however, was the pettiest, meanest, most miserable, horrible woman I have ever met. After about a month, she started telling blaming all her mistakes (and there were some huge ones, like insulting alienating a really important politician) on me in front of the board and the president. Then she started accusing me of stealing things from her desk and purse. Then she got arrested for shoplifting. Then I quit, and got this job. So while it's a little boring, at least I'm not abused.

So, in sum, probably the most important thing about a job is your supervisor. And even so, I still really, really can't wait to quit. I'll probably leave in July, but hopefully we will find a replacement for me in June and I can leave early.

I'm also working at a PI firm, but I'm lucky enough to have the opposite experience. I love the two lawyers I work with in our office, and I feel like the other paralegals/assistants both like and respect me. I'm thrilled to have gotten the opportunity to work in a small firm and learn some of the ropes as to how a lot of this stuff works. I hadn't even worked in a real office before I started here. Haha, they sure took a chance. =)

but I will ditto what you say. Small business requires a good community/atmosphere or else it will be miserable.

If I end up accepted at the school I want to go to, I won't quit until just before I start school. Unfortunatly I work at a place I'm under contract so if I start school in the fall of 2010 (which is my plan), I won't renew my contract in the spring of '09 and I guess I will go independent and work until I start school, then work part time. Contracts usually end at the end of June... Or, i could just break my contract in August but then it wouldn't make me look good...

I say go for it. After this summer, you probably won't have the time nor the peace of mind to go traveling. IMHO, it's worth it cos in three years, $5k is nothing compared to the memories you'll make in places you've always wanted to go!

off topic: How are you getting student loans already? don't the loan providers give money to you once you're actually attending law school. Or are you a senior in college right now?

I am so happy someone started this thread!
It never occurred to me that more people were stuck at their crappy jobs because they can't quit because they are starting law school in less than a year. But here we all are! Wonderful!

I would love to just kick it at minimum wage for the summer, but in Mass you have to have health insurance and I can't give up a decent paying job for a min wage one just cause I wanna stab myself in the eye.. can I?

Worse yet, my lease is up March 1 and I don't wanna sign another one for a year because I don't know where I am going to school yet! The other option is to bunk up with Mom and Dad for the summer, but I REALLY hate that idea

I don't work in legal right now and haven't given any notice of me leaving.. It didn't even occur to me to give them any more than two weeks... well I guess I could do a couple months cause by then I will know what my plans are.
