Re: Suspended
OP
If your whole frat got in trouble- Set an appointment with the Dean of Student Affairs and see if you can get it taken off your transcript(There will be a note on your transcript but it gets taken off in five years)- Play it as you weren't saying the racial slurs and you're goals are to go to law school. Some deans may look at it like you may look good for the school if you get into a good law school (If your GPA isn't good you're shit out of luck).
If you or only a select few got in trouble - You're shit out of luck

no, it's completely appropriate to make people suffer repercussions for their actionsradikal_eyes wrote:it might be helpful to know the context/content of the racial slurs..
furthermore, it's quite unfortunate that the school administration decided to address this incident through punitive measures rather than constructive, on-campus discourse around hate speech and racial sensitivity.

If it makes you feel better op I got caught banging in the girls dorm bathroom. I had to go in front of the dean and explain my actions.
I swear a requirement to being an RA is homlieness and no fun.
Luckily I only got a warning.

Does ATL still pick up threads from TLS when they are searching for stories?

Re: Suspended
The people saying this will make you look "bad" are actually being nice. This looks horrendous especially in a society that is increasingly sensitive to such issues. You're automatically a risk to firms, employers, and institutions among others who care about their brand.
Your job is to convince them that you aren't a risk. And yes, that will be an uphill battle.
But the battle starts with you. The battle doesn't start at "how do I manipulate the process so I can downplay as much as possible and say it in the fewest words possible?" I think the thing you should be worried about most is your attitude. You don't seem to have learned anything (evidenced by "I was in the wrong place at the wrong time.") You don't seem to be taking responsibility (evidenced by "Everyone else was doing it.") And you don't seem to even comprehend your own actions and why you're being punished (evidenced by "but we were drunk doe.")

Re: Suspended
This is the most entertaining thread I've come across on TLS in a while.
OP, better hope the person reading your application isn't a minority... Not that most members of academia wouldn't take offense anyway. I also wonder exactly how you were specifically identified in the incident. When fraternities as a whole get in trouble it's almost always a collective punishment and nothing that would penalize you independently.
That being said, if your numbers are high enough someone will probably take you.

People are being unduly harsh. This is fairly typical undergrad shit. Of course, that does not make it okay. But people do a lot worse.
OP, just tell the truth. You will be fine.

It probably comes down to the details. If it resulted in a 4-week suspension though...my bet is on it being pretty bad.minnbills wrote:People are being unduly harsh. This is fairly typical undergrad shit. Of course, that does not make it okay. But people do a lot worse.

Re: Suspended
Lol or imagine having a character and fitness interview with a lawyer who is black, and you have to explain face-to-face how you were suspending for yelling the N word. Talk about awkwardness right thereNucky wrote:This is the most entertaining thread I've come across on TLS in a while.

Re: Suspended
Based on OP's earlier comments, I could almost see him saying something like "cmon, it was just messing around" or "its just like the penis game", expecting the interviewer to just start laughing and be like "oh well, when you put it that way..."patogordo wrote:i know right? black people have no sense of humor.kaiser wrote:Lol or imagine having a character and fitness interview with a lawyer who is black, and you have to explain face-to-face how you were suspending for yelling the N word. Re: Suspended
Definitely be sure to clarify that it was the penis game, but that you subbed penis with a racial slur, in your applications.
This may bar you from the T-14 or maybe even T1, but again, if your numbers are high enough you'll have options, for better or worse.

And at C&F, challenge your interviewer to play the gane with you to see how addictively fun it is. He will be a convert in no time.Nucky wrote:Definitely be sure to clarify that it was the penis game, but that you subbed penis with a racial slur, in your applications.

Re: Suspended
I think any normal person has been in a million situations where, in the eye of the public, what's going on is completely unacceptable.
time would be helpful (work a couple years).
Why don't you start a student group where you invite some greek leaders, multi cultural club leaders, student leaders and have "Frank Discussions About Race on Campus" as an effort to have a student-driven initiative to challenge the status quo and help work on race relations on campus (lol). In a year, write your PS about this and how much you learned.
