I wish this didn't happen but it did. I had to walk away out of fear of becoming dumber through exposure to nonsense.
Also I have had multiple family members ask me if I'm applying to Cooley. They seem to think it is a good option. It's very odd.

Maybe they will overtake them in the rankings this year.

Do you live in Lansing or something? I can't imagine why Cooley is in the public consciousness (unless it's because they're getting sued by graduates)

You should probably retake that 168.

I finally convinced my dad that waiting a yr and retaking was the right call. He responded by saying if you think you could get a near full ride at local instate tt(t) why don't you live at home and do 1L there while you reapply to schools with your retake score. Then start 1l again at t14. I assumed that wasn't possible/bad advice. But I was intrigued.

"There's no reason anybody should go to Stanford over UC Hastings. Why pay twice as much money for the same degree?"

-Practicing Attorney with no knowledge of the job market or the price of attending Hastings

Coworker: "You should get every person in the office to write you a letter of recommendation"
Me: "I think that would be a bit repetitive"
Coworker: "No that just means the letters will be more believable. Also, is there a pre-law society at your school?"
Me: "Yeah there is. I'm not a member though."
Coworker: "You should get a letter of recommendation from the president of the pre-law society."
Me: "I should get a letter of recommendation from a student who is the president of a club that I'm not in?"
Coworker: "Definitely"

"You should drop out of this class"

-My Kaplan LSAT instructor after I scored a 169 on my diagnostic exam (I suppose this one's debatable)

Don't you think you're shooting a bit high? Are you sure you can even get into a school like Hastings?

-My Mom trying to convince me not to apply to Columbia with a 3.6 GPA and 178 LSAT. Thanks Mom.

Yeah that's actually really good (and surprisingly honest) advice. If you have a 169 diagnostic Kaplan can't help you.

In defense of pre-law advisers: My UG Pre-Law adviser was pretty knowledgeable and helpful for my application. Never got any bad advice from her.

In keeping with the topic: My aunt, upon hearing about my T14 aspirations, thought I was being a bit ridiculous and tried to talk me into going to the worst TTTT in my state (something like a 36% full-time, longterm legal employment according to LST). In fact, most of my family thought I was being a hopelessly out of touch dreamer if I mentioned Columbia or anything like that.

If you're dead-set on law school and this is the major you can get the highest GPA in, then poli sci is fine. In that regard, I don't think the aforementioned advisor is egregiously wrong. But if you want fallback employment options, not so much.

Variations of this have been posted, but from a co-worker on choosing a school:

"In the end it doesn't matter because you get the degree. Then it's just a piece of paper."

Granted, this was in reference to a "tier 1" with $$$ and a top 20 with little $, so not as extreme as Thomas Jefferson vs. Harvard or something.

Closer to detroit than Lansing but in michigan nonetheless. I try to respectfully explain that I wouldn't have the greatest career prospects by going there... But on the inside I'm screaming hell no.
