There is no real evidence that the JD by itself is worth anything. People who were successful outside the law often had family connections, came from money, or worked successful legal careers. The JD is there- but they got to be successful because of something else. The trick is to find that something else. So the best you can say about the JD is that they were successful in spite of it.
Additionally, the JD may have some value, but if the debt is too high, that will erase whatever small boost it gives you and make you even worse off in the end.
