Re: CLASS OF 2018 MEDIANS! (LSAT/GPA/Class Size)
GULC is a great place to study law. The city is tons of fun, the network is amazing, and the opportunities are endless. Admittedly, there may not be as high percentages getting into big law when compared to the other t-14, but they are coming close to Michigan and Berkeley. Moreover, the diversity of options in DC allows students to get a wide array of experience so that they may make an informed decision as to what they want to do with their law degree. I know students making six figures as lobbiets while taking evening classes who used there G-Town connects to get their job; and I know recent alumni that tried big law in their second summer, didn't like it, and now have their own firm founded which is growing exponentially. Not saying GULC is for everyone. But it is not a shit hole.
Granted, the Dean may have been a bit forward in asking for donations during orientation. And I have no idea what they were thinking with the active shooter drill. But overall, Georgetown Law is a great place to be in life.

P.S. "Coming close to Michigan" is like narrowly losing to the Washington Generals.

So do we know if class of 2018 enrollment as a whole is down? Most recent thing I can find is from a Feb. post from the faculty lounge blog.

So we freak out about GULC asking for donations, yet no one gives a shit about Cornell's expectation that students will pay back their scholarships, as written in their FINAID application...

You don't HAVE to pay back anything. A "moral obligation" is not an actual obligation.

Of course, but it's still ridiculous.a93212 wrote:You don't HAVE to pay back anything. A "moral requirement" is not an actual requirement.

Confirmed, Deans are hypocritical assholes. I'll donate to my school when my Dean declines to take a salary out of moral obligation to her school.

Meh I don't like the strong language, but I think ultimately the thought behind this is fair though. The reason the schools are able to give scholarships (big or small) in the first place really is due to alumni giving, so if in like 20 years you've made a shitload of money I think it'd be a good idea to donate so that someone else can benefit from the scholarship just like you did.BrazilBandit wrote:"Please note that scholarship awards are given with the understanding that there is a moral obligation to repay the Law School if future financial circumstances permit repayment."

I think you're right. Still, it's in pretty bad taste to put this stuff in the offer letter. Maybe it would be nice to say in a letter that came with your diploma or something: "Go forth, and if you succeed, think of us" etc.chuckbass wrote:Meh I don't like the strong language, but I think ultimately the thought behind this is fair though. Yeah I think it's a mix of bad timing and bad wording.Nekrowizard wrote:I think you're right. Still, it's in pretty bad taste to put this stuff in the offer letter. I'd accept this logic for need-based aid, but not for merit-based scholarships. Recipients of the latter have already paid back in a way by allowing the school to prop up one or both of their medians, often by sacrificing better (if scholarship considerations were removed) opportunities.chuckbass wrote:Meh I don't like the strong language, but I think ultimately the thought behind this is fair though. Re: CLASS OF 2018 MEDIANS! (LSAT/GPA/Class Size)
Yeah I remember reading this. It's certainly not cool by any means, but kinda understandable. Like has been said, not the best wording nor timing. On the flip side, what bothers me is that they're so aggressive about getting donations (and making it known before you even start school) and they're sitting on a 5-6 billion dollar endowment and charge 60k a year in tuition. I don't feel like I have to be particularly grateful for 20% off 60k when most of that is for cash hoarding for other programs and paying inflated law professor salaries.Hikkomorist wrote:I'd accept this logic for need-based aid, but not for merit-based scholarships. LJL at the school that charges $60k to go to school in fucking Ithaca wanting to get in a conversation about moral obligations.BrazilBandit wrote:"Please note that scholarship awards are given with the understanding that there is a moral obligation to repay the Law School if future financial circumstances permit repayment."
