A tie is treated as if they're both 4. So anyone with C or C ranked 5 will be losing 2 points (off by 1 and double for T14). At least that's how I understand it.

Edit: was thinking about the contest and have no idea how they're ordered within the tie. Sorry about that!

False. As should be clear to anyone with even a passing familiarity with our alphabet, "Ch" comes before "Co".

The truth is that USNWR publishes even more granular rankings that it distributes only to insiders. We can see from the data that Columbia is slightly (but noticeably) above Chicago, while Duke is above Michigan. In other words, the "insider" rankings look as follows:

Good question. I'm looking at the actual assigned point values, and the spread between Cornell and USC is minuscule. We're basically talking about statistical noise here. For all intents and purposes, we're in a T22 world now.
