Damn Catholics and their fed clerkships.pamphleteer wrote:WUSTL's location probably prevents it from seriously competing with the SoCal schools (so it's impressive when it outdoes USC, like last year) but you'd think they wouldn't do 7% worse than Notre Dame which has similar geographic issues.LET'S GET IT wrote:Yeah and USC & UCLA both 10% better than us. i never understood why anyone would go to WUSTL- mainly bc of the lack of any decent legal market in its proximity. Is the portability of WUSTL that much more than the USCs, GWs and fordhams

Lol I was being serious. I Have never really read anything that bad about WUSTL. Even now, the reactions to that mediocre 31% are lukewarm at best.

Aren't their employment stats the same (roughly) as they were last year? And I don't think ND's 6% difference matters at all..

Re: Latest employment data
I get all that, I was just cautiously optimistic there would be an uptick since most other schools seem to be having one.
Starry Eyed--I think the portability can be a bit better depending on where you want to end up. WUSTL has a better name than any of those schools in the Midwest. We also do ok in NYC. But I certainly see what you are saying. Now if you are from Cali or the South or Pacific Northwest, and want to get back there, WUSTL is a really bad idea.
Plus they are generous with $$$. I have friends here from Cali who are here with $$$, and didn't even get in to USC/UCLA

Dude above you wasn't joking. It's one of the few schools that can give a guy with a 2.7 GPA a legit shot at a job for less than 100k COA.starry eyed wrote:Lol I was being serious. How muchch percentage points should we add to schools like Vandy who don't have home market s but safe to assume that if they did would place better into big law. And do Yall think students at these types of schools don't put a lot of thought into bidding strategies?
Hypothetical: median at Fordham vs median at WUSTL for ny big law? Who's got better chances

Strictly for NYC? Fordham easily. But for most other places, WUSTL easily. That being said median at either school is a bad spot to be in and you probably aren't getting biglaw.starry eyed wrote:How muchch percentage points should we add to schools like Vandy who don't have home market s but safe to assume that if they did would place better into big law. Re: Latest employment data
I think WUSTL is still an up and coming star, still new to the T20. (as well as the institution as a whole) It was one of my top choices as I was given a full ride and I'm paying sticker here.
Think a decade or so ago, they were rank 30-40, while schools like ND, USC, GW, UCLA, etc were still solidly in the 20s.
Their BL/Fed didn't really change and it improved quite a bit over the past few years, not to mention this year, they improved solidly in the FT/LT placement.
They also just started the NYC corporate law externship like 2-3 years back, so I'm sure it's only going to get better over the next few years once that starts kicking in.

Re: Latest employment data
WUSTL admitted a massive class for fall 2014 but their 2012 and 2013 1L's were much smaller than normal. So we should see solid numbers the next couple of years but be wary of how many people they're going to let in if you plan to start there in the future.

My impression is that WUSTL's 1L class size this year was kind of an accident. They had a higher than expected yield, I think.

Re: Latest employment data
It was definitely an accident since they were calling people in June and July trying to get them to defer. But I agree with the logic that the next two years should have better placement, and then it probably nosedives back down with our massive class (which is even bigger than the class numbers were just released for).

Re: Latest employment data
Does size of class really correlate with placement, at least in the long term?
I mean the more alumni you have, the better networking chances and hiring connections, no?
I guess I'm wondering, why doesn't Yale, Stanford, Chicago, Penn, Duke, NU, etc with ~200 students, double their class size?
The hit to placement would be minimal if at all, their law alumni will expand at twice the rate, and the university and law school would get so much more $$$.
If they collectively did that, lowering standards by a bit won't be an issue to their rankings.

It's clear that small class helps. All you need is do is look at Georgetown for evidence of that.

Yeah but I think that c/o 2016 is pretty concerned about it in the short term. It's almost definitely more difficult to place a greater number of students, especially when most NYC firms will take 0-1 of your students.

it was no accident that WUSTL had a larger class size, it was TLS.

I doubt it. It's a really great building and they do a good marketing job and throw out nice $$$$. Hell, I might think about deferring if they sent me a call and offered me more money to do it.starry eyed wrote:it was no accident that WUSTL had a larger class size, it was TLS.

Re: Latest employment data
fordham and GW classs sizes have been on the decrease... is it a coincidence that they are loathed on TLS?
how the hell is WUSTL, in St louis nonetheless, getting 0L's to attend in droves?
