PSA for newbies: US News & WR only takes into consideration the MEDIAN LSAT and median GPA. The ranges are just FYI but the MEDIANS are used to calculate the rankings. That's why MEDIANS are so important in law school admissions.

Great news for UT which was already the top school in one of the top economies/legal markets in the country. Now it will expand its national range. UT should only continue moving up in these rankings (for what they are worth) under their new dean, formerly from NYU. He's positioning the school to be THE place for practice in Latin America, one of the main markets in the 21st century. Not sure if they've formally announced the program yet, but they have established a program with ITAM, one of the most prestigious universities in Mexico (Pres. Calderon went there) so that students can attend their third year yet graduate from UT. If you attend a second year at ITAM for law, you will be licensed in Mexico. They are looking at similar programs in Argentina and Brazil. As a project finance attorney, the only places you do deals where English doesn't govern the transaction documents are Spanish and Portuguese-speaking countries. Brilliant strategy on the part of UT Law!

I also heard that if you do your second year at ITAM, you have the option of doing your own negotiations when you get kidnapped.....

Here is how this works: A school will spend a lot of money on massive scholarships to raise the rank of the school (raising the expenditures and attracting high LSAT/GPA students). Over time, people with scores in this range will begin automatically applying to the school because they will feel as though the school is as good as the schools around it. Years after students begin doing this, the law school will stop handing out so much in scholarships - but - the high LSAT/GPA students will still apply and attend because they feel as though the school is as good as its peers because it has been ranked where it is for so long. Whether a school that does this is as good as the schools around it is to be determined on a case by case basis.

^I also think that their recruiting is quite impressive. They have their students reach out to their potential recruits, it's actually a very nice personal touch. Though I won't be going, both of the students that I talked to were very nice and answered many of my questions about the school. IUB is the only school that does this, as far as I know.

yeah, but these admissions kids are being paid. perspectives become much different when you speak to someone not on the payroll. so, the personal touches provided by IUB actually swayed me away from the school, because they simply lie.

Emory does this. It isn't always successful, although it might result in short-term changes in USNWR rankings. Other factors besides medians will need to remain in place for the school to sustain its rank.

Many law schools use current law students as contacts for prospective law students.

Indiana's scholarship fund donation was either $30 or $35 million so it could easily last decades if only 8% or so is given out each year as scholarships. Of course, this depends in large part upon the investment return on the donated funds.

That makes ZERO sense. In my mind, this puts the dagger in the legitimacy of US News Rankings.

Apparently, there was a change of methodology this year. In the employment statistics area of the ranking formula, US News included people who are unemployed and not seeking employment in their calculation of employment outlook--which may or may not be better.

To put it in perspective, if the US gov used such methodology--the unemployment rate would be like over 20% as opposed to 9 percent.

buffalo actually does very well in the Western NY market. if you don't mind being in the middle of freakin nowhere, it's actually not a bad place to be-- i.e. there is almost no competition for jobs there (because really, who wants to work in buffalo). you're pretty much it, plus you have little debt (if you're from NY state)... whereas st. john's grads are competing with four higher-ranked NYC schools, PLUS all of the other t14s who choose to come to ny after graduation.

i wholeheartedly agree that usnews is on crack (maybe both crack and acid), but i'm just not sure that buffalo being above st. john's is the situation that proves this to be true.
