Given the numbers-gaming they do I doubt the median is lower than the average.christobel wrote:Hm, the article says "an average LSAT of 168", did they mean median or is it possible that the median is lower?Huskies13! wrote:Gtown is:

I was wondering about the same thing... The President keeps mentioning averages...(for both LSAT and GPA)christobel wrote:Hm, the article says "an average LSAT of 168", did they mean median or is it possible that the median is lower?Huskies13! wrote:Gtown is:

I dunno about arrogance, but being in your target city does convey some advantage. I can understand wanting to make inroads into your target, especially when you consider some people might be local to Miami.crestor wrote:What befuddles me about UM having the largest class size out of UF FSU AND UM is that if you are instate, UF and FSU are significantly cheaper both in terms of tuition and cost of living, much higher ranked, have better employment outcomes, and have smaller classes which means less competition among peers once in the legal market. The median lsat is 160 for uf this year. FSU was 160 last year and it very likely went down.. 162-164 is very likely their 75. Hit that and you are in at both unless you royally screwed around in undergrad (2.____ gpa.) You have to love the arrogance of our millennial generation thinking they will all be top 5 in their class at UM and hit big law miami.ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) wrote:Their class size is obscenely huge. Pretty sure it's referring to the median LSAT/GPA. Georgetown accepts a good number of low GPA splitters who would drag down the average (mean) significantly, which would make the 3.75 GPA extremely unlikely.christobel wrote:Hm, the article says "an average LSAT of 168", did they mean median or is it possible that the median is lower?Huskies13! wrote:Gtown is:

why wouldn't they just say median then? what's with the sudden change??? there has to be some underlying motive..KevinP wrote:Pretty sure it's referring to the median LSAT/GPA. What are the medians?
For the 2012 entering class, the median GPA was 3.72 and the median LSAT was 169. The 75th and 25th percentiles for GPA were 3.82 and 3.43 respectively. The 75th and 25th percentiles for LSAT were 170 and 165 respectively. "

I can confirm that a memo was sent to Cornell faculty on 8/30, describing the "preliminary medians" as 167 and 3.66.
It also says that there are 195 entering students, which is two less than what Dean Geiger reported at orientation.

I find this thread to be extremely motivating. I can't wait to destroy the December LSAT. Back to studying.

I wish Cornell would whore themselves off a little more for GPA. That would benefit me.RetakeFrenzy wrote:Oh yes, the one student I mentioned actually deferred so will not be joining us this year.Lavitz wrote:I can confirm that a memo was sent to Cornell faculty on 8/30, describing the "preliminary medians" as 167 and 3.66.

Re: C/O 2016 median lsat/gpa/class size
They were rejecting high GPA 166 LSATs meaning they were confident they would maintain the 167 but at the end schools like Berkeley and other t-14 poached a lot of their 167 late in the cycle. They should have been accepting pretty much all of the 166s above 3.8 and at minimum 3.7 instead they waitlisted and lost most of those.Dmini7 wrote:radar714 wrote:at USC orientation they told us C/O 2016 has 3.70/166 medians, no 25ths/75ths tho
edit: also class size of 176
The way USC was throwing around money I am surprised they weren't able to hold their median with a drop in class size.

Re: C/O 2016 median lsat/gpa/class size
A 157 median would actually represent a 1 point gain for Miami. However, their website reports "average" LSAT and GPA. They also did this last year apparently if you check the class profile page. Their average LSAT last year was a 157, while their median turned out to be 156. Maybe it's the same for this year?Huskies13! wrote:Miami Medians (no class size)

How? It makes zero sense. GULC routinely enrolls people with sub-160 LSAT scores. They aren't balancing those out with dozens of 180s.christobel wrote:Yeah? I think probably just an error. Posting averages for schools like Georgetown will almost certainly yield lower numbers than medians. It could very well be the averages, but I doubt it.crestor wrote:

Just like they routinely enroll sub 3.5 GPAs, but aren't balancing them out with 4.0s.Tiago Splitter wrote:How? It makes zero sense. GULC routinely enrolls people with sub-160 LSAT scores. Why do they go by median rather than mean? It's not like there's going to be some crazy outliers jacking up the stats to make the data misleading.

Because median is a more accurate representation on whats important. Outliers have no effect on medians while they could completely change the picture under an average system, in a way that isn't particularly important. Each 180 or 150 would shift the average disproportionately higher than what is meaningful (which is just one kid got in). Trust me, as a splitter, I wish they would use averages, but it makes sense why they don't.ManoftheHour wrote:Why do they go by median rather than mean?

+1, medians also allow them to have a little leeway once you get away from the median itself. You can accept some people way below median who are URMs or have amazing life experiences because you know it will only hit you a little. If they averaged it's possible they'd even be less holistic than they are now.Clearly wrote:Because median is a more accurate representation on whats important.
