If 40% of the class qualifies for maintaining their scholarships, why do only 30% get to keep them? Additionally, according to their site about student outcomes and disclosures, it looks like approximately half of students have their scholarships eliminated or reduced, which also makes me wonder where the 30% is coming from. Am I missing something?

Could it be that when they say 40% have a 3.0 but 30% of students keep their scholarships, that 1/4 of the students above the 3.0 were not on scholarship? That could make sense mathematically, but idk the numbers seem weird to me too bc that means a disproportionate amount of kids with schollys are finishing below the 3.0. Section stacking maybe? Wouldn't be surprised at it...

Just got an email with the subject "Scholarship Increase" from a named email account without any indication what school it was from. For a split second I was overcome with blind optimism that NU had increased my scholly for some reason, but quickly saw that it was just more spam from TTTT Phoenix Law... I hate you Phoenix.

Lol. I was just offered an "additional" 90k scholarship from Phoenix Law. I haven't applied to any schools this cycle because I underperformed on my LSAT.

Just another random thing about Phoenix, but according to their site about scholarships, they claim the following:

The award is renewable for subsequent semesters as long as the student has a 3.00 or higher cumulative PhoenixLaw GPA. PhoenixLaw grades on a curve, thus limiting the percentage of grades in each course. Based on the grading curve, approximately 40% of PhoenixLaw students in a class will have a GPA above a 3.00. However, only about 30% of the students with scholarships will maintain their scholarship.

Damn, that's desperate. Creighton seems to fit the bill for a law school that might have serious budget issues - their class size hasn't been that large, at least in the past few years, tuition is more than double U-Neb, which probably places as well or better, there are probably more cows than breathing humans in Creighton's legal market, only a select few get full tuition...shut 'er down

Would the world be a worse place if schools were not allowed to solicit via e-mail at all? At the very least, students should be allowed to choose which schools can send them information. Seems like a simple enough function to add the LSAC's site. I guess they would just flood your physical mailbox. Some do both (Rutgers)

This is more likely the case. While I like to think I do a pretty good job at selecting scholarship recipients, no school will have the top 1/3 of their incoming class as the top 1/3 in grades after the first year. There are always underperformers and overperformers. Every year I have someone 160+/3.4+ end up in the bottom half (sometimes worse), and there are ALWAYS 150-ish/3.5+ people in the top 10 (and yes, those GPA's include no-name directional schools as often as elite publics). As the saying goes, that's why you play the games.

LSAC used to charge a penny for every name a school downloaded. Then they made it free. Schools see email as a "free" medium of communication, and in my opinion, have abused the hell out of it. We, as a group, are strangling the goose that laid the golden egg.

The rationale is a noble one. Our goal is to reach students that might not have considered all the schools for which they might be a good fit. Confirmation bias is strong. Many students THINK they've done enough research, but in reality they've only done enough research to reaffirm their existing ideas. While there is a lot of information on the internet, it's not all accurate. Not all (perhaps even most) applicants do not have access to prelaw advisors at all much less good ones, many work and don't have time to research like the want to, etc. Allowing law schools to send information to students is one way for these students to get information.

The flipside is that it is up to law schools to use this responsibly. I try very hard to make my emails short and relevant to the intended audience. However, because of a few more aggressive schools, people stop reading ALL law school emails, regardless of source, and we all get labeled spammers. I know a lot of students who missed law fairs in their areas because they gave LSAC their parents' address, not their own. I give out fee waivers at events so they missed that opportunity.

I don't necessarily fault schools for spamming people. I understand why they do it. In a down year, they get pressure from their bosses. They will get asked, "Did you do everything you could to recruit and increase applications?" And what person wants to respond "Well, not really. I mean, we could have contact more students, but I didn't think it would work and I didn't want to bother them."?

I totally understand why the veteran admissions people who remember what it was like back before US News and when there were only like 150 law schools and no internet. It's a much more competitive game these days, which creates some not so positive behaviors in both applicants and law schools.

I think it was a vestige of the days where they used to like mail schools physical lists pre-printed on mailing labels. But remember, everything they charge schools for is one less thing they need to make up for with revenue from students.
