Looks like everyone is anti-certificate here so I figured I'd try to balance out the discussion. I did Widener's Certificate Program and I wholeheartedly endorse the program. If you get a certificate at all, make sure it is ABA approved. I have been working as a paralegal in a small plaintiff's PI firm for the past 3 years. My job includes literally everything related to personal injury litigation except for taking depositions, standing up in court, and giving legal advice. I love my job and I do more substantive legal work than pretty much all of my friends who are 1st year associates. I am applying to LS in the 2014-15 cycle.

First, if you have a paralegal position you could get without a certificate (family connection, etc.) then do it. If you are starting fresh with no real connection to the legal world, then a certificate is a great way to get your foot in the door. Even more than what you learn, it's the people you meet and the relationships you make. Many professors will be adjunct practicing attorneys and many firms will recruit directly through paralegal programs. That is how I got my job.

Three years later, I have a list of connections and relationships I have made that I can come to once I graduate law school. I have 2 standing job offers and many people who said they will help me any way they can once I become an attorney. Although I can't speak to how a paralegal certificate would help you academically in LS, I know it will help with getting a job. My experience getting a paralegal certificate and working as a paralegal has been invaluable.

Good luck.
