At least they base their standings on what matters though. I think they deserve credit for that. If TLS is going to recognize USNWR then hey should lend equal, if not greater, credence to ATL's... Unless you really care about the size of the lawbrary or your fellow classmate's UG GPA.

Re: ATL Rankings Update?
I agree with the beginning. There is no perfect ranking system like others have said. There are schools with National Reach, then regional schools that have a strong hold on their market then TTT that just take people's money. I think most people on here do a good job of telling posters to ignore the rankings and base their choices on employment, cost and location.Nucky wrote:If that's the case I misremembered and stand corrected. You understand that once you're at the level of most T-10 schools employment stats become very similar and one good way to differentiate is by extremely prestigious positions, right?

T-6 then. Yale kids get a pass because they could do more biglaw if they wanted to.ymmv wrote:This is bullshit.bugsy33 wrote:Max324 wrote:Or SCOTUS clerks, let's not forget SCOTUS clerks...Nucky wrote:If that's the case I misremembered and stand corrected. Re: ATL Rankings Update?
One thing ATL does that I wish USNWR would do is end the myriad of ties (especially in the top 50, or at least top 25). There just can’t be that many legitimate photo finishes.
In looking at last year’s ATL thread, one of their key components was COL (which rightfully dropped NYC schools down a few pegs). Apparently ATL has abandoned COL in their current evaluation or else NYC living has become considerably cheaper in the past year.
What I would love to see is a regional ranking, in my case seeing the South would be interesting. I wonder if this is even possible?

So an 11% difference in employment between Columbia and NYU is, what, meaningless?bugsy33 wrote: T-6 then. Yale kids get a pass because they could do more biglaw if they wanted to.

Uhh no.........and no one is saying that. Is NYU ranked higher in the ATL rankings???ymmv wrote:So an 11% difference in employment between Columbia and NYU is, what, meaningless?bugsy33 wrote: T-6 then. Yale kids get a pass because they could do more biglaw if they wanted to.
Stanford and Columbia have nearly identical BL+FedClerk %'s. Columbia is ranked one spot lower because they've had less SCOTUS Clerks (I'm guessing).

I had nothing to do with the list being attributed to me in this thread, although I think it's generally pretty good.
I also agree with the point that rankings are essentially meaningless outside of a handful of national schools, although there are always ten thousand clueless boomers eager to tell the prospective student that BU or Emory or Fordham "has a national reputation" or some such nonsense.

I'm currently on a business trip and a lady there who graduated from Thomas Jefferson is trying to tell me how TJ is "not a bad law school." It's hard for me not to openly laugh in her face.Paul Campos wrote:I had nothing to do with the list being attributed to me in this thread, although I think it's generally pretty good.

Re: ATL Rankings Update?
Emory has a very strong national reputation. FYI: Placement extends well beyond Atlanta, Florida, NY. Under employment is only 5%. USNWR just upped Emory by 4 positions To claim that a top 20 LS doesn’t have a national rep is absurd.Paul Campos wrote:I also agree with the point that rankings are essentially meaningless outside of a handful of national schools, although there are always ten thousand clueless boomers eager to tell the prospective student that BU or Emory or Fordham "has a national reputation" or some such nonsense.

NYU also has more students who self-select into PI than a lot of other schools. As a non-biglaw centric person, I hate rankings based entirely on that.bugsy33 wrote:Uhh no.........and no one is saying that. True. And the real metric for biglaw placement ought to be offer rate at EIW/OCS anyways, as a rolling average.Holly Golightly wrote:NYU also has more students who self-select into PI than a lot of other schools. In the case of ties, I don't think they're claiming that the two schools are identical; I just think they're acknowledging that the differences are within the margin of error of their ranking methodology. In that case, reporting a tie is probably more "honest" than going out two or three decimal places just for the sake of definitively putting one school ahead of the other.Saddle Up wrote:One thing ATL does that I wish USNWR would do is end the myriad of ties (especially in the top 50, or at least top 25). Re: ATL Rankings Update?
For the heck of it I was just looking at job postings from a placement company (even though I am three years out for job postings to be relevant).
Nearly every job posting stated that the applicant had to be from a top 20 school (in some cases with top 20% grades). More surprising was that the openings for experienced attorneys, the top 20 school stipulation remained. I will assume that their top 20 school ranking is not from ATL.
