The OP is just about right. I'd go one step further and say the schools are doing everything in their power to perpetuate a myth that everyone will be just fine if they finish that TTT law degree. And I am talking about going beyond the misleading job stats that they publish in big glossies for the applicants. I have had professors pronounce that we will all be "just fine" and we'll all find jobs. Not sure how they know that? Hey we can pretend whatever to keep every last paying body enrolled, right? This is not the type of situation you want to get yourself involved in as a student---when the professors themselves turn into salesmen, something has gone wrong.

No one is spending 3 years and thousands of dollars to "better the legal profession". They're trying to better themselves. Applicants should think of law school as an individual decision with individual consequences not as a homogenous sector in the economy. The fact that there are too many lawyers in general doesn't matter if you go to Yale. The labor market is different for graduates of different schools.

Unless you have very solid alternatives (liberal arts majors typically do not) T6 or T14 with a large scholarship is still a good decision.

OP takes a relevant warning and wildly distorts it. Going to a T14 on a fullride is usually going to be a pretty good decision for someone who wants to do biglaw.

Unless he is in the half of the class that doesn't get biglaw?

Should I add the qualifier of "those who don't have strong alternative options"? A coinflip for a job that starts at 160k is actually a pretty good option for a lot of people. (Especially when the costs are just the cost of living and opportunity costs.) Hell, if someone strikes out after OCI, they could just drop out then if they were biglaw or bust (and so the costs are a year of cost of living and opportunity cost).

While I agree that this is a dumb thread, I'm going to continue it anyway b/c it could potentially yield interesting info.

So, we are all in agreement that:
1) There are too many lawyers
2) The legal profession is shrinking due to outsourcing, e-discovery, etc.
3) Many, if not most, of the people who are going to law school shouldn't.
4) Law schools are perpetuating this problem b/c law schools produce big bucks for colleges
5) Going to a TTT is almost always, if not always, a bad idea
I'm sure the list could go on, but these aren't the issues at stake here. The question is whether it is a bad idea to go to T14, or even YHS, even w/ a full ride.

I have yet to see any proof that YHS, or even CCN, or perhaps even T14 graduates are setting themselves up for a penurious life. Sure, some might be pushed into public interest when they wanted to go private, but w/ generous loan forgiveness programs, this will still result in a relatively comfortable lifestyle (unless, of course, you need 3 homes and a 120 foot yacht to be comfortable).

If anyone has proof that a degree from YHS, CCN, or any T14 school will likely, or possibly, lead to unemployment, please share. If not, let's just end this thread.

Well, crap. I guess I must not be the exception with my guaranteed job after getting my JD, 3.9 GPA, and zero debt. Thank you, random person on TLS. I guess I'll take that job at Hooters after all.

I'm not sure if you're aware of this, but you can actually get rid of your loans by paying them off like normal people. You don't have to go into bankruptcy to get rid of debt. I know, it's crazy! But unbelievably, it's actually true!

I agree with you that I would be afraid of going to most of the T14 at sticker. But why don't you address my points when it's a full ride @ a T14?

Try paying back 200k in debt with the average starting salary for attorneys of anywhere from 60-35k and then get back to us.
