He's a 1st term president starting the fight for a second term and the public hates lawyers. Thats part of the reason for the 'average joe' movement in Congress (something I in no way agree with, letting the idiots rule is an awful idea - not to say lawyers aren't idiots, but typically less so than some of the 'average Joes'). So yeah... this isn't news.

You are clearly an uninformed individual. Also, Who runs china? -> Engineers. Think about the shifting balance of economic power and then reevaluate your statements.FighterPilotF22 wrote:lawyers are a lot more brilliant and useful than engineers! how many engineers are in congress?!
lol my point is this, lawyers >> engineer. who wants to make 35k and nerd it up at a Ford Factory?

If engineers are really so valuable, why don't we pay them more?

Somebody gets paid a shit wage to make sure your food gets to the grocery store you shop at. Migrants gets paid slave wages to pick the fruit and veggies you eat. Do not equate social value with one's wage. the CEO's at large banks completely fucked large segments of society and got rewarded with million dollar salaries. Teachers are some of the most socially valuable individuals and yet most states underpay them. Salary=/=social value.pinkzeppelin wrote:If engineers are really so valuable, why don't we pay them more?

Engineering majors are commonly the best paid.pinkzeppelin wrote:If engineers are really so valuable, why don't we pay them more?
But either way pay isn't about value it's about supply and demand.

Re: Obama said the United States needs to produce more....
America is a TTT. An economy built on buying cheap imported crap coupled with a garbage K-12 education system and astronomically high healthcare costs. And an obscene military budget - my mom teaches in the inner city and the place is literally falling apart, but hey, always money for some crazy ass new military project.
People talk about American innovation which is wonderful, but how in the hell can we generate the massive numbers of jobs that pay a decent wage for a family to survive on? How can we compete when you can pay someone in an emerging market a tiny fraction of the wages an American receives, for the same productivity?

"But either way pay isn't about value it's about supply and demand."
exactly. look at the differences in salaries between phds in engineering/sciences vs business.
engineering phds start at 80-90 (9 month salary) while organizational behavior phds start at 110-120
at the same school! clearly, a phd in chemical engineering >>>>>> phd in org. behavior. however, difficulty
does not always determine pay.

This is on point. Engineering needs a certifying / governing body in order to control supply to raise salaries. This, however, may have the unfortunate side effect of even more lost manufacturing sector jobs. Engineering is also fairly easy to distribute globally to low labor cost nations which have vast armies of engineers (think china and the rest of asia). If US wages rise in engineering the equation for off-shoring becomes more attractive. This is also happening in the legal field. Think about where that will push legal salaries.

'The nation needs less of ME!'

Don't we already have tons of schools like GA Tech, MIT, INCLUDING state schools that produce tons and tons of engineers?! I think the real problem lies in the fact that our manufacturing sector is going abroad. Love Obama, but I think this is a crutch statement for why our economy is doing poorly.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
