This is a good point; I didn't realize until recently how many of my friends hadn't ever had minimum wage jobs or worked through school.paratactical wrote:Totally tangential, but I kept food service experience on my resume even after I had been out of UG for 3 years because legal recruiters I worked with said that it is good to show that you can be dedicated to *any* job and that you don't view certain things as being below you. That being said, this wasn't for job interviews after professional school.

When I want the dates to right-align, occasionally I make the entire line justified, and then put spaces in the middle of the two phrases.

I don't understand what the problem is. I did this too. Isn't this a pretty obvious solution? Are you worried about the format getting screwed up when it is sent to school or put into pdf?eskimo wrote:This is what I ended up doing - works perfectly!lzyovrachievr wrote:When I want the dates to right-align, occasionally I make the entire line justified, and then put spaces in the middle of the two phrases.

Re: A couple of Resume questions...
I was once advised to eliminate dates on my resume to conceal the fact that I am no longer young.
This will work perfectly for law school, assuming adcomms conveniently ignore any information on my application.

Re: A couple of Resume questions...
I ended up formatting like this:eskimo wrote:Also, I have a kind of urgent question: How can I get just a few words of text to right-align?
Like if I have
XYZ University -------------------------------------------------------- May 2011
I want "May 2011" to be right-aligned, but when I try to only right align those words, XYZ University AND the rest of that section go with it.
Let me know if it's not clear what I'm trying to do, but I need to get a resume sent off to my interviewer this morning and I want it to be perfect!
XYZ University, XYZ City
Bachelor of Arts, Expected June 2011
Major: XYZ GPA; XYZ
I think it looks pretty good.

If it makes you feel bad, there is no way you are as bad with computers as meeskimo wrote:I'm just bad with computers, sorry if it's "obvious" to you...GettingReady2010 wrote:I don't understand what the problem is. Re: A couple of Resume questions...
to do the right align you can also right align before you type anything and then put spaces so that the stuff you want on the left scoots all the way over to the left side.
not sure if that made sense haha...and it might be the "non-tech savvy" way to do it but it worked for me
and thanks for the format d34dluk3, that's really what I was looking for! I think I'm going to have to keep my lame part-time job experience on there because I don't have a ton of stuff in the first place
edit: even those of us who aren't horrible with computers can't deal with weird word formatting issues sometimes...it drives me nuts.

Please say you didn't really put your email as d34dluk3@gmail.com on your resume
.
But that resume looks really clean and professional...I wish mine looked that good.

That's my personal resume. I don't want to put my company email on it and my school one is expired. I'll use my company email for my LS resumeKnockglock wrote:Please say you didn't really put your email as d34dluk3@gmail.com on your resume.

PM'd you a TLS-formatted version of my very redacted resume. If anybody else would like to see the general kind of info I have on mine, just ask. I'm still in undergrad, so it's mostly activities/honors focused.LSpleaseee wrote:wow yours looks really good (and complicated to format haha)

Re: A couple of Resume questions...
Yeah, Word 2007. 2007 is really nice because you can just set your theme instead of formatting every line. Once you have your theme set up how you want, you just set text formatting to "heading 1" or whatever and it fits right in.Knockglock wrote:Dumb question probably, but what program did you make that in? just word?
(Yes, I know 2003 technically does this, but it's really crappy.)

If you mean mine (eskimo did you stealth edit one out?), it's not bad. Just columns, a theme, and justifying everything correctly.LSpleaseee wrote:wow yours looks really good (and complicated to format haha)

Re: A couple of Resume questions...
yeah I was talking about yours...I didn't consider the "theme" though that makes sense (I was thinking you went through and changed every color/font/font size/columns). It looks niced34dluk3 wrote:If you mean mine (eskimo did you stealth edit one out?), it's not bad. Re: A couple of Resume questions...
Yeah, that's fair. I've actually been thinking I need to tone the color back on it. I do like the blue, but it's too much right now. I'm going to go darker, I think. I hate the boring black and white resumes though. I do think it's possible to be professional with color.paratactical wrote:Make sure that if you use color, you use one that will print in black and white as well.
Also, I think the Skills on the right side is a pretty weird format and I would hesitate to do weird stuff like that on a resume.
As far as formatting, it has to work and work for you. I feel like this works, but to each their own.

Re: A couple of Resume questions...
I think even with the color it looks pretty professional (I mean it isn't pink and green). and then the column thing I think would be a matter of preference. I won't have columns like that because I don't have enough to put in there lol, but if you do and it doesn't look too crazy then go for it. I thought it looked clean and readable.
edit: really good point about the printing though

Re: A couple of Resume questions...
Yeah, that's a really good point. I actually think that if I was not hand delivering them, I would just change the theme to black.paratactical wrote:I think you can have a little more leeway with being "creative" when you're applying for schools or internships. Color isn't bad, as long as it prints okay in black and white. You don't want some school or employer printing it out to review and having all your headings not print. Just test it on a plain printer and see how it looks.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
