News flash: if you 'have to try to be beautiful', you aren't.Nicholasnickynic wrote:Whats wrong with that?snowpeach06 wrote:No joke, I almost wrote my personal statement about being ugly. Then I decided against it because it seemed whiny. But, it is unfair how my super cute friends get so many more opportunities than me when they aren't any smarter.
They have to try to be beautiful, you were born smart.
To me, it seems unfair that people born smart get all the opportunities.

When I worked in corporate America, it seemed like there was definitely a bias in favor of attractive women and taller (though not necessarily particularly attractive) men.

i think almost any man that isn't obese can pull off a suit nicely. for men it comes down to confidence not necessarily "blank slate" good looks.dontknowwhereimgoin wrote:uglies don't build book, facts of life, etc
of course good looks lead to more confidence ala high-school socialization, but if you can build inner-confidence in other ways (for example, earning a top school JD) i think a moderate or even ugly man can find success and bring in clients etc.

Re: Attractiveness and Legal Employment
I do think society is harder on women than on men in this regard. Having worked in fashion, you wouldn't believe some of the things I've seen girls do to themselves to stay sample sized. Now that I'm out of that field, the pressure to look a certain way is less relentless, but it's still there. I'm not suggesting that guys get a free pass, but if I had a dollar for every girl I've ever met who has harmed her health in the name of beauty, I could pay for law school outright. It's fun to play around with hair, makeup, and fashion, but this is all surface stuff, and at the end of the day, it doesn't matter much. Intelligence and kindness >>>>>> barbie/ken looks.
Oh, and incidentally, the person whose appearance I envy most is African American. Every time I see her, I'm reminded that I will never be as gorgeous as she is. She is also one of the most accomplished people I know. She's going to be a fabulous lawyer.

I disagree that halfies are always more attractive, but it does seem like they do generally tend to be more attractive than average. I think that the mixing of races and ethnicities is actually a big part of why society, as a whole, seems to be getting more attractive (except for that whole "obesity epidemic" thing).

This thread is about legal employment, not law school admissions. You just outed yourself as a blonde.SandyC877 wrote:Total Flame. Then why am I not admitted to Yale on full ride?

If firms are ugly discriminatory, should law schools be too? (pictures w/ apps; mandatory interviews?) A big factor in rankings is reputation. What's better for reputation than hotties?
