Beyond HYS and maybe Columbia, schools are still somewhat regional. I didn't have any desire to work in the South nor DC. Also in secondary markets a lot of employers don't look at rankings. If I wanted to return to my secondary market in the West , it's probably easier from a school that has more recognition.ze2151 wrote:postit- while the "lay prestige" of uva and duke may lag behind others in the t-14 (at least from your perspective as a westerner), both schools do extremely well nationally.
I visited when I was applying. They are generally WASPier than most of the other t-14. I think they offer pretty good QOL though.disagree with the comment that it's fine as long as you're a wasp. go to c-ville. it is a tremendously progressive town. i've visited durham and would say similar things about the research triangle area, though i don't know the area as well.
TLS probably has a stronger contingent of UVA trolls than anyone else if you haven't noticed. I was just being honest about what I thought when I was applying.if you want to dismiss these two schools out of hand as "southern" and therefore on a lower echelon, that's your business. but as a northeast corridor, philly-born "yank," i see a lot to love in both schools and would eagerly choose them over a comparably ranked northern school. it's a matter of taste.
op- in case you haven't noticed, TLS has within its population a strong contingent of arrogant rankophiles who are married to leiter, usnews, gourman, tls, or other rankings systems, systems that largely show a preferential option for the northeast (at the expense of the south, southwest, and west). if you like duke, go for it.

Thanks for this and the other replies. I can't believe the above thread didn't show up on my searches.ObviouslyMasochistic wrote:See my thread from last year here: http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... =1&t=58243 .
Also, I chose Duke over UVA, Mich, Berk, etc. PM me if you'd like.
