I know the thread is a month old, but I thought I had to point out an important factor. Many want BigLaw so they can pay off big loans they took out to pay for law school. $160k is nice for a person in their mid-20s. Except that If these people actually land such a job, they seem to think they can keep all of their salary. If you land BigLaw in NYC at $160k, you should come out with just over 100k in net pay. If you are one of those found wanting and are stuck in the $130k purgatory, you can expect to bring home about $83k. Still good pay for a person in their mid-20s. That is, if one no longer requires food, clothing, shelter, insurance, or transportation. The take home pay for LA is similar, but the COL is less gouging.

Because the drawbacks associated with biglaw are present in mid and small law (where the pay is much less). So if you are going to deal with the same problems as a big law associated, you may as well get paid in the process.
