No law sch requires TOEFL

A few law schools require TOEFL, especially those outside of the T14. Duke is the only T-14 that requires one, the others I can think of are UC Davis, Indiana-Bloomington and Emory.

I really don't understand why they do not accept international students who study in the UK as a TOEFL waiver. Are they suggesting that people can't learn English in England?

How did you read my post and come up with that answer?

sorry, I made the wrong assumption that seven889 was asking about JD instead of LLM/SJD, and my answer is based on information I found about JD applications. But most schools do require TOEFL for LLM/SJD, including Berkeley.

FWIW, for international students w/ just overseas degrees, only Duke, Chicago and Berkeley (I think) require TOEFL scores. No other schools do.

UChicago does not require a TOEFL for JD students with overseas undergrad if they have any other US degree. Including US graduate degrees. Similarly, many other universities waive the TOEFL requirement if you have a US grad degree.

hey I saw earlier that a few people got into georgetown. out of curiosity would you say that you were well above their medians or close to them? for example like if you had a 1st (kinda puts you above their GPA median) and say a 167 (at their 25th). I definitely think this thread will be very useful for getting a better gauge of what a 2:1 etc is to law schools but thought i'd ask now just out of curiosity.

Al, I'm pretty sure I'm going to reapply later. I've been looking at masters programs in London and just caught wind of the MSc in Environmental Technology (kind of a misleading title, it's a really interdisciplinary program and has an enviro econ + policy track) and it looks spectacular. Argh.

Pretty worried about my cycle now having gotten my first rejection from W&L less than a week after completion. My LSAT isn't spectacular but I'm retaking in December, although it is above W&L's 25th percentile and my high 2:1 is certainly at its 75th percentile GPA as well...That really makes me wonder whether the school has treated my foreign transcript seriously as I saw from the other thread and on LSN that people with the same LSAT and lower GPA than mine are waitlisted/accepted. Does being international really make such a huge impact? I can't think of anything else that could possibly go wrong in my application...

hey xqhp that sucks about W&L. are you a us citizen (sorry if thats posted earlier, i didn't see it)? maybe an expensive school like W&L doesn't want to take a risk on someone who can't get federal loans? This has me pretty worried because I definitely would have thought median LSAT+2:1 would mean admit.

my guess is that not only did cig's lsat make him an autoadmit but his first and rest of his application will make them throw scholarship money at him.

nope I just got my MA (4 years) at Edinburgh (like Cig i think.....) and im applying straight for the JD.
I could do a 2 year LLB back home, but I think the level of education in the US is way better, i.e. more courses, clinics etc.

Just discovered this thread; best of luck to all you foreign applicants! I studied in the UK and have friends from Ox/Cam/Durham who did the LLB and might want to come stateside in the future- but have no clue how 2.1/2.2/1sts will be differentiated and treated by admissions. I hope you don't mind me checking in from time to time to see how you all are doing.

heyyy you have friends from Durham who wants to go to the states for JD? I'm from Durham! i hardly know anyone who knows anything about grad schools in the US so would be nice to know what they're up to:)

Yes Mando - the quality of the clinics/courses in the States looks infinitely more appealing and interesting than Australia/New Zealand where I did my undergrad. So attractive yet so freaking difficult to break into. GAH! In saying that, I've only applied to one school so far so it's not a rational rant...

The only thing is that you can get a law degree for around £9000 compared to $100000 here!
Ah well.
