Re: OLD SCHOOL (must be 30 and over ITT)
Figured I'd share a link to a blog I read regularly. 40 year old woman going to Seattle Law -- interesting read. Oh and looks like she just got a $2,500 a week internship -- poor, poor girl -- wasting her time at a TTTT. Here is a little positivity for those of you that don't mind hearing that it isn't all doom and gloom out there!!! For all you doom and gloomers --you probably shouldn't read -- it won't fit your narrative! I kid -- love you guys!
Enjoy!

Seeing that a large percent of the student loans are uncollectable anyway under the old payment plans, why not make it less burdensome for students with borrowers? I'd think if the payments are lower more people will stay current on payments, maybe results in more repayment as a whole. I would say we can look at it as transfer payments or entitlements. Everyone deserves a chance for education. We can hope that these loans will undercut the need to support people in the future. What needs reform are the institutions, not the fed system.anon sequitur wrote:Objectively speaking, the current PAYE system is nuts, like throwing gasoline on a fire in terms of overall cost of education. It's great for us students/recent grads though, so I plan to support it until I'm safely out of school and into repayment, then vote against it. I feel like it's a chance to get my own piece of the boomer dream.patogordo wrote:yea i know i'm copping that PAYE too. just gonna keep voting democrat and hoping for the best. lot can change in 20 yrs.

You should probably wait until you see how the legal market really is before you start hyping law school up. Not everyone will have the luxury to be ok with going back to their pre-law school job when they find out how shitty the legal market really is.navykev wrote:Figured I'd share a link to a blog I read regularly. 40 year old woman going to Seattle Law -- interesting read. Re: OLD SCHOOL (must be 30 and over ITT)
I mean, everyone applying to law school needs to consider really really seriously why they want to go, what they want to get out of it, and under what circumstances it makes sense actually to go. And providing a space to discuss those questions is one of the most important purposes of this site. That said, that's not really the subject of this thread, and the debate here seems to be dealing in generalizations (on both sides), which is less helpful for individual applicants than considering their specific circumstances in other parts of this site. So maybe we can stick to the issues specific to 30+ applicants in this thread.

Hi all!
Checking in to see how everyone is doing - happy to see several new "faces!"
Feel free to ask me questions here or PM me (you'll probably get a quicker response as I'm slammed at work and don't always check TLS on a daily basis.)
Happy Turkey Day!

Kickass. Could you share if you were in the 75% or 25% in terms of LSAT scores for Duke? Do you think your softs helped?

I'm feeling old now, when and where did this become a thing? Is it an age difference or culture difference that made me unaware of this? Definitely am not picturing this when I use the terms drill team or color guard.

The rifle people in my HS marching band color guard did that kind of thing, so it's definitely not recent. (Note that it's marching band, not some kind of proto/pseudo military group.)

Well.. doesn't the whole marching band notion trace its roots back to the military?A. Nony Mouse wrote:The rifle people in my HS marching band color guard did that kind of thing, so it's definitely not recent. (Note that it's marching band, not some kind of proto/pseudo military group.)

Probably, I just meant it wasn't a military-style drill group, since I have the impression those still exist today distinct from marching band. Like the difference between color guard = people carrying American etc. flags in a parade and color guard = flag and rifle twirlers in a marching band. (Proto wasn't the best word.)haus wrote:Well.. doesn't the whole marching band notion trace its roots back to the military?A. Haus, the topic came up talking about scars in another thread. I mentioned one I got from the front sight and bayonet cutting my hand open during drill practice. As the conversation progressed people were thinking I was talking about marching band or something (as Nony stated).

Re: OLD SCHOOL (must be 30 and over ITT)
konoha - Thanks! My LSAT was right at Duke's median, 169. I definitely think my softs helped. I have 10 years of biotech experience - pretty heavy engineering and project management. I did not submit a "Why Duke" essay, and my PS focused on why I have decided to go back to school.
navykev - that's great! I interview with Georgetown soon…keeping my fingers crossed; although Duke is my top pick.

Welcome! Did you apply to more schools? 169 with your bg should get you a lot more options. If you plan to do IP biglaw after school you should be mindful where firms at your target location recruit the most. You might even be able to land a part-time job during school or have the firm pay for your law school by working as a tech specialist, if your school is close to the firms.

Re: OLD SCHOOL (must be 30 and over ITT)
So, I took the LSAT for the second time this morning. The first one made me competitive for admission where I want to go. I'm hoping this time will make me competitive for scholarships. Anyway, two things struck me. One was that when I was about 1/3 of the way through the third LR section, I had a very definite feeling of "I'm really over this" come over me. Luckily I fought through it, but I'm hoping that isn't a sign of my age and that it will continue and get worse as a law student. (I'm 44, BTW.)
The next one is much more fun. I was a teacher and coach for sixteen years. And one of my former team captains was taking the LSAT in the same room with me. We are applying to pretty much the same schools, too. Well, if we end up as classmates, I've got a head start on finding a babysitter next year.

Re: OLD SCHOOL (must be 30 and over ITT)
I got the "I'm really over this feeling" earlier this fall (2L for me). Then I realized I really was over it b/c I was losing so much time with my children, so I'm heading back to the classroom. I have 16 years under my belt as a science teacher, and while I don't regret going to law school, I am very happy with my decision to leave it. My kids are way more relaxed and so am I.historyman7 wrote:So, I took the LSAT for the second time this morning. The first one made me competitive for admission where I want to go. Best of luck to you, though. I hope it all works out.

Luckily, I think the "over its" is more about the logic stuff in the LSAT. I'm actually really looking forward to law school, itself. I have always wanted to be a professional student. Unfortunately, the pay isn't that great.

No joke.historyman7 wrote:Luckily, I think the "over its" is more about the logic stuff in the LSAT. I'm actually really looking forward to law school, itself. I have always wanted to be a professional student. Unfortunately, the pay isn't that great.
I also have a husband who's gone for 7 days straight, every other week. This just complicated my situation and my boys were not being able to do things that they wanted to do b/c of my inability to get them to/from activities. I also think law school might be easier with younger children, although that may seem counterintuitive.
I wasn't knocking your decision to go to law school, unless you plan on attending a TTT. Then, I would definitely question your decision.

Ouch! Single parent every other week is tough, n matter what you are doing. No worries, I didn't read it as a knock. BTW, what is a TTT?

Third tier. It originated as an abbreviation for third tier toilet/trash, but morphed into a useful shorthand for tiers:historyman7 wrote:Ouch! Single parent every other week is tough, n matter what you are doing. No worries, I didn't read it as a knock. BTW, what is a TTT?
TT = 2nd tier
TTT = 3rd tier
TTTT = 4th tier
