Checking in here too. Is it a bad sign that I have yet to meet someone in my 1L class my age or older?

Nope. I was the oldest in my 1L (by several years). Nothing wrong with it (just means you're already busting the curve).

Was oldest in my 1L class by 3 years. It's not a big deal, really. Just enjoy the ride.

31 and orientation made me feel old at times. Also took a summer class though and did extremely well. I think age can Def be a huge advantage.

I was the oldest in the entire school by about 8-10 years when I started. I was eclipsed during my 3L year when a 1L board certified cardiac surgeon matriculated.

I was the oldest woman in my class - there were 2 men older than I was, and one woman a year younger. My contracts prof continually mixed me up with the woman a year younger than me.

Thanks guys. I was starting to get concerned. I look a lot younger so it's been funny watching young recent college grads treat me like one of them and then sorta freak out when they hear the number.

Well I'm pretty immature. I think I could get kinda used to this.

I'll be 31 shortly, and I just started this month, although part-time evening. In the evening program, I'm probably around the middle of the pack age wise, so I don't feel out of place, but I definitely feel like an old man around the day students. Most of them have never worked and are still in their party mentality from undergrad. That said, I really don't converse much with the day crowd. I go to work, go to class, and go straight home at night; I don't have time to do the typical law school extracurriculars.

For other non-trad folks, was attending a remote but higher ranked school worth the seismic life change? Was attending a lower end T14 at sticker worth the 3 years away from your home and or family? Or would a full ride at regional school (T20-50) near your home/future legal market be a reasonable option for those NOT interested in Big Law?

I don't have any kids in tow, but I'm a city slicker with some roots down and the thought of having to live in Ithaca for 3 years makes me want to cry for a variety of reasons. My gut is that if you're lucky enough to get into T14 you gotta suck it up and go. Would love to hear your opinions, I'm sure people have a wide spectrum of answers.

And I'd really like to HEAR those answers, so let me beat the trolls to punch and preemptively say "RE-TAKE" "RE-TAKE HARVARD OR BUST" "Ron Paul 2012" "-insert some kind of Cooley joke here-"

Then I'd say best regional in your preferred market, and make sure to get your LSAT high enough to go for as close to free as possible. If you have a low GPA this is easier in some markets than others. No problem if you want St. Louis, real problem if you want LA, to give two quick examples.

2. I stayed at my regional with a scholly and similar goals. Staying in my house, seeing my wife and kids, etc... totally worth it. I would've done HYS if I'd had the numbers, otherwise, I think a strong regional is a very good call.

Hello all. Going to try and squeeze into this thread. I'm 29 and already have apps out for next years class. Rounding out a military enlistment, own a house 600 miles away from the school I want, fiance/dog, etc. I figured I'd go ahead and get involved here. I've got a feeling this thread will be one of my best resources here.

So, for my first contribution, I just returned from a school visit in my hometown. I'm fortunate enough to have a close friend that is a legal institution in our city. He's not a power lawyer or anything, but has been around for 30 years and does a lot of favors. That said, I had the opportunity to meet about 6 state and federal judges, small/mid/big firm lawyers, and lots of people in between, over the course of a week.

The feedback from every one of these people was pretty consistent. They all said that age isn't going to hurt because different firms/Judges are looking for different things. Some will want you more because your older, some won't. Some will want you because you're local, some won't. There is no template to hiring associates. Grades/school/personality/shaking hands/whether or not the hiring partner thinks you'll:(a) bust your ass when you show up, and (b) fit well into the office environment. That is what matters (according to my brief, limited interaction). Stay cool, grandpas/grandmas.

Just wanted to finally check in. I will be 40 soon and am beginning the application process. The hardest thing for me so far is that the only school within a reasonable distance is not at ALL reputable yet there is some difficulty in managing a different school with a family. Any advice?
