Yeah, WUSTL hooked me up within a half hour of me emailing them asking for a waiver.

+1. I'm surprised they haven't given them out through CRS, but they're more than willing to hand em out upon request.Bildungsroman wrote:Yeah, WUSTL hooked me up within a half hour of me emailing them asking for a waiver.

they don't have anything to lose by doing it. normally when someone asks for a fee waiver, and it's a city they aren't from and isn't a major city--you gotta figure if they don't get one, they're not going to apply, at least on average.
from their pov, either they reject you (boosting their selectivity numbers) or they have a new student.

So does George Washington just not give fee waivers at all?

According to the e-mail I got when I requested one, no they do not.crysmissmichelle wrote:So does George Washington just not give fee waivers at all?
I heard rumors of hidden waivers for people with stellar numbers (above the 75s) but haven't heard of any traditional CRS search or request based waivers.

+1 on the no waiver policy in a response to my request.bdubs wrote:According to the e-mail I got when I requested one, no they do not.crysmissmichelle wrote:So does George Washington just not give fee waivers at all?

in all seriousness though they did say app fees are how they have money for scholarships which is a pretty fair rationale for saying no.

"GW Law receives approximately 10,000 applications for 500 spots" (sourced: http://www.law.gwu.edu/Admissions/Pages/Default.aspx)
10000*what, 85 dollars = 85,000. Yeah, funds scholarships. 1 person at half-tuition scholarship for three years, basically. Lulz.
edit: added source
You, sir, are right. Missed the last 0... I suppose that would fund some pretty hefty scholarships. My bad. One of those quick knee-jerk reactions not well thought through.

obviously you're off on the math. that would be if the app was $8.50, but it is $850,000 so that would be five full scholarship students, and one more student at approximately 2/3 scholarship.mr_toad wrote:"GW Law receives approximately 10,000 applications for 500 spots" (sourced: http://www.law.gwu.edu/Admissions/Pages/Default.aspx)

math aside, your points does ring true about how this really is a small number in terms of the numbers we're talking about overall. that's a strong point... hadn't thought about it like that. the fee waiver for scholarship money philosophy, therefore, doesn't seem so plausible unless a school has no money whatsoever which unless their management is horrible, GWU has a fair amount of money.

to 'dude: you'll see I fessed up earlier (edited post) to my awful math skills. I suck
Not a mistake I'd usually make, so I blame the ten essays I'd just corrected (filled with grammar mistakes, turning my brain into toothpaste).
Now I feel that 850,000 isn't too bad of an amount to apply to scholarships, but skepticism is - and should be - rampant.

Well of course, because it's total BS.mr_toad wrote: but skepticism is - and should be - rampant.
I'm sure they actually do use "that money" for scholarships just to make themselves feel honest.
These "allocation" arguments are silly when you have a pool of X, such as money, and a pool of Y, such as expenditures. You need to cover all your expenditures one way or another, which includes offering scholarships to people to have competitive numbers. If someone somehow robbed a University for the exact amount the University made off apps, & declared they'd stolen "the app money", (or better yet they found a way to redirect all the app money transfers) the University would spread the loss around, they wouldn't just make no scholly offers.
If schollies did not benefit the school directly, they could make the case that schollies are an optional expenditure that they need extra funds for blah blah, but it's not, so their reasoning just allows them to keep a straight face when they talk about the app fee.

I heard back within an hour.

I just got a phone call from a blocked phone number... from a woman saying she's a 3L at Michigan State, encouraging me to apply and telling me I could probably get a full scholarship.

i didn't get a call, but got e-mails from a student. it makes you wonder how the student feels....having to go out of their way to help their law school get applicants. i'm sure most people would gladly support their school, but for ur school to really need ur help would definitely make me second guess my decision.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
