Many schools who actually average under a 150 may not actually have many law school applicants, partially due to that and partially due to other concerns.

But isn't the mean on the LSAC report the average of actual APPLICANTS only? Or is it all who've taken the exam?

I haven't met a single person at my UG applying to law schools with anything less than a 157, and most are 160-164, but my school is more similar in level of prestige (or lack thereof) to schools with low 150s mean LSAT (mediocre big public). I don't think any of the people I've talked to are lying (they're getting into predictable schools with the numbers they told me) so I wonder what explains the discrepancy.

I think it's exam takers - but not entirely sure. Many people who score a 150 probably don't talk about it or only apply to a local school or two. I know a guy in that position, and he's only considering the state school (won't be admitted) and the local T4 (probably will be, but he recognizes that it's a bad investment).

That's true. I will say that the number of undergrad programs out there is staggering. It seems like the best students do one of two things: they go elite private or big state school. Pretty much all the schools we hear of here are one or the other. For example, let's consider smart students in Oklahoma: most of them go to OU, some go to OSU, some go to good schools out of state. Almost none go to the random podunk colleges in Oklahoma, which (when put together) have way more students than OU and OSU. If they produce even as many LSAT takers as OU/OSU, they probably produce an Oklahoma average LSAT below 150......and it would make sense that we never hear from those schools, since this set skews toward the elite students and applicants.

Also, if my academic summary report is to be believed, it's a mean LSAT and not a median. I could see some students starting the LSAT and not finishing, or just guessing when they get confused. This might drag the mean down more than the median, which might be in the mid-150s. (Random speculation there).

although its unlikely that the pool of applicants for any one school will significantly change from one year to the next...i'm still just curious: this is not a cumulative rankings across all years, right? Just for this past year based upon the information in the school report?

You have to check one of the law school reports that was sent to the schools you've applied to. in the middle of the page will be a line that says "LSAT College Mean".

aw, crap, i guess i'll have to wait until i actually apply.

I think each school's LSAT mean is from all LSAT takers who registered with the LSDAS. So you I don't think that means you necessarily applied to law school, just that you registered to sit for the test.

I believe that the LSAT average shown on a person's LSAC report only reflects those who graduated in the same year as that person. A friend of mine from my school is also applying this cycle, but we graduated in different years and have different numbers. That's probably also why, on the LSAC report, the LSAT score is shown under the graduating year.
