Mcafee sucks anyway. Use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's the most lightweight virus scanner out there, and it's free (and the best performing, according to industry tests)

Yea I had no intention of holding on to McAfee but I wouldn't have minded using it to create a recovery disk and then uninstalling it.

I decided to Hackintosh a Samsung N310 I bought off ebay for $250 to take to class. Don't want to carry my MBP every day. Plus, 9 hours of battery life!

Nothing too heavy, maybe some Empire Total War. It's got an okay graphics card if I choose to.Sogui wrote:Going to be gaming on that thing?

Eww Empire, one of the few games I regret paying for. Pirate Napoleon if you must, or play MW2 Stainless Steel.Desert Fox wrote:Nothing too heavy, maybe some Empire Total War. It's got an okay graphics card if I choose to.Sogui wrote:Going to be gaming on that thing?
I wouldn't want to buy from creative anymore anyhow, I don't want to reward any company for releasing a game with bare bones units and then offering a new DLC every week for units that should've been there in the first place. I miss the unit variety of the older games.

I was wondering if Empire would be any good...tell me why it's bad.
Have had the Latitude for almost a week now. Am in love. The hinges are quite solid, and the keyboard is excellent.
Those of you shelling out for T410's and Latitudes, get the Nvidia card instead of the intel chip, it's lovely. Oh, and battery life is nice and long. If you're willing to spend a tad more, definitely invest in battery life.
Heat is surprisingly low, and it's spread out evenly. My only complaint is that I purchased the 15.6 instead of 14.1 screen. It's quite a bit larger.
I love that I have itunes blasting with the visualizer on and my system (cpu) usage is literally 0%. The i5 is amazing.

I put up with ETW because Napoleon is too restrictive for me.
I use a modified startpos (so I can play minor nations) and a pile of AI and gfx/sound mods as well.
ETW is kind of mess, but so it goes.
FYI--ETW running tolerably on an Intel gfx chipset? I'd be surprised.

The AI is awful. It's been bad in all TW games, but with ranged units, it's far worse. There are mods that improve it, but it's like putting a bandaid on a gaping wound.savagecheater wrote:I was wondering if Empire would be any good...tell me why it's bad.

Re: Best Law School Laptop for the Money
I'm enjoying my Edge so far. A few qualms:
1) The touchpad is ridiculously huge for my large hands, I always seem to hit it when typing. There seems to be no way to disable it through Windows, so I have to do it via the bios. Pain in the ass.
2) The function key locations were cool at first, but I don't like not being able to alt-f4 out of stuff.
3) There's no latch holding the lid down when you close it.
Other than that, a solid buy thus far for sure. The extra 2gb of ram I got was definitely a 45$ well spent.

I've heard good things about Terra Icognita. Apparently they rewrote the projectile tables.Foozle wrote:The AI is awful. It's been bad in all TW games, but with ranged units, it's far worse. Napoleon is indeed supposed to have better battle AI--but I don't dig the limited setting and shorter timeline.

For those of you having problems getting your computer shipped from Lenovo...
Put up enough of a fight, and they'll give you a deserved discount. I placed my order on 7/27, and it won't ship until tomorrow. It took 30 min of threatening to cancel my order, but I got 200 bucks off my purchase.

I got that one for ~$690 (the price changes every day for some reason). I am really happy with it so far. I was a tad worried about it only being i3, but it feels lightning fast. The keyboard, touchpad and (especially) the screen are all beautiful. Big upgrade over my old Inspiron.

I got an HP tm2 because it kicks ass.
But seriously, for $1000, totally loaded with i5, 8gigs, and switchable graphics, convertible capacitive touch tablet for typing, writing, and drawing notes--you should see the One Note skills this thing throws around--I can't be happier. I use if for everything from an iPad wannabe to a Photoshop and video editing processor. Couldn't be happier.

Anyone waiting for Asus 1215N 12 inch netbook or Asus U35JC 13 inch ultraportable to be released? Since classes start tomorrow I don't know if I can wait any longer.
M2TW SS is how the game should have been in the first place... Too bad newer total war games have become less and less mod friendly...Sogui wrote:Eww Empire, one of the few games I regret paying for. Pirate Napoleon if you must, or play MW2 Stainless Steel.

If anyone I ordered from took this long I would cancel my order anyhow. That is ridiculous.legalnoeagle wrote:For those of you having problems getting your computer shipped from Lenovo...

I would suggest against a netbook unless you're comfortable typing for an extended period on either a smaller-than-normal keyboard and/or no palm rest.
Otherwise, same generation netbooks usually have more or less the same specs. Some swap out the trad. HD or a SSD.. in which case you should be running Win7 for TRIM.. if supported.

Thanks for the response. I'm playing around with other people's netbooks, the ergonomics seem fine (though certainly not ideal). I'm open to small, cheap, reliable options for notebooks, but it just seems the netbook can do what I need for less money.ResolutePear wrote:I would suggest against a netbook unless you're comfortable typing for an extended period on either a smaller-than-normal keyboard and/or no palm rest.

So you think Windows 7 is preferable (I'm not overly computer savvy, not sure what you meant)? I plan on upgrading to 2GB of RAM, whichever option I go with.

Personally, I find my current 10 inch netbook with 1024 x 768 resolution a little too small for reading and writing long texts because I can only see so much on the screen at once.JusticeHarlan wrote:Thanks for the response. If you're open to the idea of spending a little more money for something slightly bigger, check out the upcoming Asus 1215n --> http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=HrglRhH8D60Rmlv3 It has a 12 inch screen, full sized keyboard, and more powerful CPU and GPU. Of course it's priced higher than a typical netbook but it could be a good compromise between a netbook (cheap but weak) and an ultraportable (adequately powered but expensive).

Going to admit, I wish I'd bought a smaller laptop. The T410 is great until you need to lug it fifteen minutes each way (sometimes uphill).
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
