Being 4th best in FL is not a good thing. Stetson's primary market is Tampa/St. Pete, which has taken a massive legal beating as of late. Being #1 in trial advocacy and #5 in legal writing doesn't mean much, as barely anyone cares about these stats, and UF and FSU grads will get hired over all but the top Stetson kids. So that would be a resounding NO... Stetson is not underrated.MMLAW wrote:DSC wrote:Unrated: Stetson
It's gone in and out of TT status on the USNWR ranking. The fact that it's #1 in trial advocacy, #5 in legal writing, and possesses an abundance of high caliber legal scholars, would suggest that a higher ranking might be deserved. I understand that it is also based on the GPA and LSAT's for those who attend, but based on the afformentioned, it is in my opinion underrated.

Hastings has an advantage that other similar schools don't. They are located directly in San Francisco, and in one of the top legal markets in the country.im_blue wrote: +1 despite the blatant anti-Chicago/NYU trolling
1 is clearly unrealistic (see: Columbia, Chicago, Penn, USC)
Every law school would like to do 2 and 3, but it takes money and the reputation to attract students, none of which Hastings has over its peers.

Re: Overrated and Underrated Schools (In your opinion)
As the below information will point out, it was a sudden shift and then UC Hastings got caught in a negative feedback loop. The question is why the sudden drop in 95? I hear that it was because they didn't supply USWNR information.jcl2 wrote: Hastings has gradually declined in the rankings over the last 20 years, I'm not sure why you think that trend is going to suddenly reverse. It's tuition may be slightly less than the other UC schools, but I'm pretty sure it is still more than every other state school except Michigan. It may be in a major legal market, but it is in a major legal market where there are also two T6 schools, and in a state with four T20s, not to mention it has to directly compete with Davis. I just don't see how Hastings is possibly positioned to make any significant upward move in the rankings.

Re: Overrated and Underrated Schools (In your opinion)
I went to SMU for law school. That being said, this is my opinion on the law schools with a lot of grads in Texas:
UT - no change
Vandy - underrated (should be T14)
SMU - underrated (but not by much, should be around 35-40)
Baylor - way underrated (should be around 45-50)
UH - underrated (slightly, should be around 45-50)
Tulane - way overrated (should be at around 50-55)
Texas Tech - underrated (should be tier 2)
South Texas - no change
St. Mary's - no change
Texas Wesleyan (sp?) - no change
Texas Southern - way overrated (should not be ABA accredited)
Oklahoma - underrated (should be at 60-65)
I know I missed a lot of schools, but these are based on my personal experiences. Southern schools will almost always be underrated. The USNews system is heavily NYC/DC-centric, since most of the lawyers surveyed for "prestige" points reside in that area.

BU/BC/UVA
If you look at soft factors, like the peer ratings/judge ratings these schools exceed those in their immedeate number range. Also, if you look at soft factors like Princeton Reviews "Best of" lists, these schools dominate categories like QOL, Academic Experience, and Job placement.
These shools are better than their rank.
