I am not really sure, but I can't see there being too large of a bias against Americans who attended a Canadian law school. There might be complications in obtaining a work permit and things of that nature that might hinder your chances. I have heard that some law schools (particularly UofT) do not view American candidates too favorably as well.

I would consider doing a joint J.D./J.D. if you do want to have the back up option of practicing in Canada at some point (the barriers I mentioned earlier may still apply though, especially if you are looking at practicing in Ontario). NYU offers a joint J.D. with Osgoode (York University), Ottawa has one with Michigan State/American University, Windsor has one with Detroit, and Calgary has one with Houston.

Camron makes good points about Canadian legal education. I want to add that Canadians pay much less for their undergraduate education as well, so the lower lawyer salaries make even more sense.

The NYU-Osgoode dual JD program is now defunct. UBC/Hawaii, Calgary/Houston, Alberta/Colorado, Ottawa/American/Michigan State, Windsor/Detroit are the only ones left. That said, if you're really interested in a dual JD, I would try to set up an ad hoc program of some sort with a top US school.

I don't think the visa issues will be huge. You should be covered by a study visa and a fairly generous post-graduate work permit. You should take a serious look at these before making the plunge though. Also keep in mind that Canadian schools are all fairly regional, so ties may come into play. Your chances of ever practicing law in the US with only a Canadian degree are also quite low.

Eurozone unemployment hits record high
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Unemployment in the eurozone rose in September to a record high of 11.6%, the European Commission's Eurostat statistics agency reported Wednesday..

The figure was a slight increase from 11.5% in August. The increase is more significant compared to September 2011, when the unemployment rate was 10.3%. The number of unemployed people in the 17 nations of the area, which share the euro currency, rose by 146,000 to 18.49 million.

Unemployment rates within the euro area vary dramatically from one country to the next. Spain, with its sluggish economy, has the highest unemployment rate of 25.8%, followed by Greece at 25.1% and Portugal at 15.7%.

On the other side of the spectrum, Austria has the lowest rate at 4.4%, followed by Luxembourg at 5.2%, and Germany and the Netherlands at 5.4%.

The U.S. unemployment rate stood at 7.8% for September.

For all of the full 27 member-states of the European Union, including countries that do not use the euro, the unemployment rate was unchanged at 10.6%. The rate was up from 9.8% a year earlier. The number of unemployed people in the 27 nations rose by 169,000 to 25.75 million.eur

But northern Europe is not so bad:

http://www.foreignpolicy.com/articles/2 ... an_miracle
In Austria, however, the rate is just 4.4 percent, up slightly from a year ago but persistently the EU's lowest unemployment level. This is also a country whose tourism industry seems recession-proof and whose capital city of Vienna is repeatedly ranked No. 1 on Mercer's Quality of Living index. It's an enviable record, to be sure, and one that seems counterintuitive in the context of a slumping global economy, regionwide pressures, and a common currency on the verge of collapse.

Hi all,

If you're looking for a way to go to law school without worrying (as much!) about the economic consequences, consider looking at Chicago-Kent's Honors Scholars Program.

It offers full-tuition scholarships and $10,000 annual living stipends (no GPA requirements for renewal) as well as opportunities for one-on-one collaboration with the Dean, extensive networking, supplemental lectures, and additional faculty advising based on academic interests.

If you have a strong GPA and an LSAT score of 165 or higher, take a look here for more information:

http://www.kentlaw.iit.edu/academics/jd ... rs-program

The application deadline is this coming Monday, January 28th.

Let me know if you have any questions (I'm currently a 1L in this program and have been thrilled with the experience), and best of luck in your searches!

Two thoughts:

1. why would you put this in the recession panic megapost?
2. How does it feel to know that while you will graduate debt free, you still have a less than 50% chance of getting an actual legal job unless something radically changes before your OCI in 7 months? ( http://www.lstscorereports.com/?school=chicago-kent ) Since we are on the subject, how does it feel to know that your classmates are taking between $20,000 and $70,000 in debt per year to face those same chances?

Lemme splain: if you are nice after that, somebody might do it despite u pointing out what an idiotic choice Kent is. If you are being brutally honest, they have a better chance of getting it than Kent grads do of getting jobs ( which still isnt saying much, I know). Pre laws are what she is targeting and they are the ones most in need of a brutally rude awakening.

I was being sarcastic brah....personally I cant stand Kent because they wont stop mailing me some stupid brochure or postcard every other day. As if the first ten wasn't enough "oh here's a pamphlet of Kent's most interesting people", that'll get them to apply!

My bad. Sorry.

This seems very optimistic for a school whose median dropped to 159 and 75th to 161. 162 would probably be a more realistic peg.

Just saying mang - besides the fact that they have a 48% employment score, they also seem to have pulled a magic LSAT number out of their collective ass. Just amused me is all

Understand it's a business like any other. Times are hard and they're doing what they need to do to get decent candidates--regardless of it being moral or not. If any of us were in the same position we would do the same, if not, they'd get someone who would. You all need to jump off these dean's nuts and just chill and ignore their posts. Consider them as trolls and move on.

Im applying to law school this cycle. I graduated last year and I'm working in a law firm outside of Philadelphia. I think I'm realistic about the job prospects.

I however just heard someone talking in the sandwich place I'm am eating at right now about his son and law school, and for whatever reason it really struck a nerve. I couldnt help but post, and please excuse the grammar as im on an iphone.

His son went to wake on a full ride and graduated near the top, and got a job doing doc review in DC. He's trying to get out so he doesn't get stuck so he applied to a job on Craig's list to a small firm in this suburban county of Philadelphia. When he arrived there was a kid coming out from the office. When he went in the partner had a 3 inch stack of law resumes. The partner told him point blank that most of these resumes are Cornell, Virginia, Georgetown and Penn grads with a respectable amount of experience. It was clear to him that he wasn't getting the job, as he walked out someone else walked in.

Very sad. Can't help but question this path when you hear this.

Can't help but blame the baby boomers. They deliberately deceived young optimistic students with their phony "97 % employment" statistics. Meanwhile they kept making more and more Law Schools and tuition has skyrocketed out of control. Back in the 80's and 90's a legal education was actually feasible and didn't require students to go into mortgage-like debt (without actually owning a house). Now you got kids putting themselves a quarter million dollars in the hole to go to Brooklyn Law School drawn in by reports saying that they'll be making that much in a year once they graduate and are immediately swooped up by a giant NYC firm. Now we have about double the lawyers this country needs with most students unable to pay this non-dischargeable debt that will burden them for the rest of their lives. And of course the government is glad to shell out taxpayer money for anyone who wants to take on this debt since you know.. higher education is always going to pay off in the end! Gee, sound a bit like the housing bubble to anyone? Gonna question the logic behind this and point out that if students can't repay the billions in educational loans you hand out then you're just pissing money down the drain? You must just hate the idea of poor people pursuing the American dream! All for what? So that out of touch faculty at these Law Schools that know nothing about the legal market or have any care for the fate of their students can collect cushy 6 figure salaries? Congrats boomers, you earned it. Screw the next generation.

Understand it's a business like any other.
Just like all those other businesses funded by non-outcome tested government loans with no risk of discharge in bankruptcy.

If a law deans and their institutions won't be held to a higher standard than Fast Eddie of Fast Eddie's Fast Sale Pre-Owned Vehicles, they're not entitled to more respect or privileges, either.

Dear Moderator,

Your attempts to terminate my account and posthumously edit my original posts have rendered me lugubrious and crestfallen, but no less determined to respond with the unmitigated fervor and enmity that your transgressions warrant. You have foolishly outed yourself as an immodest tyrant, espousing confounding notions of detraction and dissent against the glory of our omniscient and all-powerful Steeler gods. Repent, and stand humble before your dark master, the Steel Curtain, whose pristine earthly legacy was sealed and predestined thousands of years ago, sworn upon the blood and tears of fearless warriors who risked their lives to fight and spread the truth to the pathetic, godless cretins who would not obey the order of evil which, despite their futile efforts to claim their so-called freedom from this order, failed and were simply rats in a cage. Their false senses of self-righteousness, honour and integrity were the petards by which they were paradoxically hoistered, and still, to this day, we see heathens such as yourself denying the Truth of the Steel Curtain. Year after year, our dominance has been unrelenting and unwaivering, our puny, weak, pathetic, merely mortal opponents inevitably falling and crumbling to the ground, obsequiously bowing to our supreme moral authority as we restore order to those who have foolishly thought they could disrupt it.
