I compared the T400 to the macbook pro and went with the macbook. personal preference in the end though, both are solid computers. I have owned 3 lenovo's, and all were a solid product.

This came out today regarding the Windows 7 Upgrade Program. If you haven't recently bought a computer, it looks like it's going to be $49.99 to upgrade to Home Premium and $99 for Professional until July 11th. The article doesn't detail the specifics of how companies are dealing with recent purchases though.

Most companies will actually be giving free Windows 7 Upgrades for computers purchased tomorrow and after, but I am not sure how they are dealing with recent purchases (June 1-25th). At Dell, the sales rep said my June 12th order would be covered under the free program. Other sites have said the 26th is the first day. Microsoft isn't charging the makers for the free upgrades, which makes me think that the date might be more flexible with other manufacturers too.

The T-series have the magnesium roll-cage design, shock-resistant hard drive and built-in security chip -- all of which make these machines rugged, durable and secure. The processors and RAM used are also top of the line stuff.

I assume that you looked at the IdeaPads or similar models. Those are more like entertainment machines, so the features have a more multimedia focus. Since they are also designed to be trendy, the machines are physically more fragile than the Thinkpads. I think their design is frail and bloated in comparison.

Furthermore, it's actually more expensive if you try to match the processor of your T400. The speed may look similar, but not the cache size and clock frequency. That's a lot of geek talk, but basically, the machines you saw at the store probably use weaker processors. What machines did you see specifically, and what were their prices?

Ultimately, the T400 is rugged, minimalistic and powerful. I think you'll fall in love with it when you actually have it in your hands.

The only lenovo that I could identify was an X301 which was $1700. The cheaper models didn't have model numbers and ranged in size from 15.4 inches to 10 inches, and were priced from about 350-600 dollars.

...the free windows 7 upgrade is not available for Vista Home Basic...so you basically have to upgrde at least to Home Premium for $42 to qualify...which is a bummer

as a general rule of thumb, extended warrantys are rip-offs. a long time ago i read that 99% of hardware failures within 5 years occur in the first year. almost all laptops come with one year standard. so let's say you're putting down $300 extra on a $1200 laptop. you'd only come out ahead if there was a greater than 25% chance that the laptop would irreparably break in the two extra years. if only a hard drive fails, you lose, if only a processor blows, you lose. you only win if the laptop completely breaks and you get a whole new one. even then you don't really win because the current value of the replacement will be far lower than the initial $1200 you paid.
