Hello,

What is the shortest amount of time anyone ever took to write a law school personal statement that got them into a T20 or above law school? Thanks

Probably an hour? Personal statements aren't that important. As long as the personal statement isn't glaringly problematic, it won't affect much. By the same token, a really good personal statement that you worked on for months... also probably won't affect much. LSAT, UGPA, rigor of undergraduate curriculum, recommendations, and work experience/resume typically seal the deal. The personal statement provides context. That's pretty much it.

I don't think I spent more than an hour or two on mine. Had an idea, banged out 500 words, proofread a couple times. Done. Admissions is mostly a numbers game anyway.

I'm sure there's someone out there that spent 10 minutes.

No better way to prepare for the realities of a legal career than by spending an hour on banging out whatever the first idea is that comes into your head and then asking a younger sibling to proof it and give them 15 mins

Hey, that's an interesting question! Honestly, the time it takes to write a winning personal statement can vary a lot. Some people spend weeks or even months refining theirs, while others might crank out a solid one in just a few days. I’ve heard of people putting something together in just a day or two and still getting into a top law school, but that’s definitely not the norm.

The key is really about quality, not just speed. If you can get your thoughts together quickly and write something compelling, then go for it! But for most people, it’s a process of writing, revising, and getting feedback. So, if you’re in a time crunch, just make sure you’re still giving yourself enough time to review and polish it up.

Good luck with your application!
