I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to mention in a "Why X school" essay that a school is, for example, one of your top choices or specifically one of your top three choices. Would they just interpret that as "well, that means we're not your #1 choice, then?" and not look favorably upon it, or no?
Basically, I'm not sure if, after explaining all the ways a school is a great fit, specifically saying it's one of my top three choices would help or hurt me.
Mention that a school is "one of my top choices" or no? Forum

If it's not #1, I don't think that should be highlighted. Schools know everyone applies to multiple schools anyway. Just talk about why would want that school ("why x").

I am inclined to agree with Mr. Archer, as few schools will likely be impressed by making the #3 spot on your list.
Although you may want to ask the team over on the Spivey thread as they have a number of people there who have actually spent time reviewing applications.
