Re: Tattoo PS revised
Care to elaborate? I had gotten a couple positive reviews when I shared it last week, but I did make some pretty big changes.El Pollito wrote:Don't do it.

Yea. EP is right. Dont do it. This is just a story. If shortened, you could use it as part of your PS, but as is, i learn little about you. You dont have to direct it at law, so dont think thats where im going, but you at least need to show more about yourself than this story offers.

I think you could tweak it to highlight your resilience. You and your family were shattered, then nearing the anniversary of the event, you resolved to keep moving forward to your life, even as you remembered the past. The tattoo is both a memorial to the past and a promise to yourself and your future.

I am not a proponent of extremely personal personal statements. And also, as lymen said, it's an extremely personal story that doesn't really go anywhere. It's a lot of telling with no showing by way of example.trkmaniak00 wrote:Care to elaborate? Re: Tattoo PS revised
OP HERE:
Thanks for the feedback, some of the things you guys have brought up were definitely some things that I had considered as potential issues.
I'm a splitter (~25% gpa and >75% lsat) so I figured I should try a bit of a risky statement for the T6 or so, but perhaps this is a bit too much.

Setting aside whether this PS is "risky" (I don't think the topic necessarily is as long as it's written carefully), you should recognize LS admissions for the numbers game that it is.
Schools -- other than Yale, Stanford and Berkeley -- are fighting tooth and nail to keep their medians up. That leaves very little room for a compelling PS to make much of a difference either way. To the extent that schools will evaluate your PS, they're likely to use it to assess your employability because schools are now forced to care about their published employment statistics. A PS isn't great to assess employability, but it could offer some clues. Are you a good writer? Do you seem mature? Do you seem well-rounded enough to make polite chatter in interviews?
In this climate, your best bet is a polished PS that illustrates a personal strength. I think this topic could be tweaked to show resilience, as I said earlier in the thread, but something a little less personal could be just as good on that front.
As for the idea that you need to set yourself apart to get into a T6, I don't think that's at all true. There's a decent chance that one or two of those schools will be willing to take on your GPA in exchange for your LSAT. Also, schools that are not T6 are very good places to attend as well.
