I'm a super splitter (171 LSAT and 2.45 cumulative GPA, 3.3 Degree GPA). I figure I really need to explain my 3 consecutive semester of low grades but I'm not sure how detailed to get. Other than these 3 semesters the grades were unremarkable but respectable, but I basically got mostly Fs for a year in a half because of severe personal problems. This was 8-9 years ago now but I had a severe drug problem. So do I spin it into a story about overcoming addiction or do I basically just say, "I had a lot of personal issues that are now behind me."

If the story about overcoming addiction is the real story - I think that could be a much more powerful statement that shows growth and maturity much more than "a lot of personal issues" which could read as "I was busy being lazy". Especially since you have so much since then, you have the opportunity to show adcomms that you've overcome adversity and moved on - if I were in your position, I wouldn't wash it over with vague language that could easily be misinterpreted.
