People seem to have differing opinions on this issue, but here are my two cents:
I think that bottom line is that, if you have something that you want to share with the admissions committee that isn't in your personal statement ... sure, write an addendum. For example, on the advice of an admissions consultant, I wrote a brief statement (one longish paragraph) about how I come from a family of lawyers. This wasn't to showcase my diversity, so much as to show that I have an understanding of what a legal career entails (I come from an arts background), but it's the same principle: I had something I wanted to share that didn't fit in my PS, so I shared it. As long as the statement doesn't come off as a sob story, it should be fine.

Thank you, that's good to know. I'm hoping I could write it so that it just focuses on having a unique perspective/life experience, not on having to overcome any hardships.

Yeah, I think if you keep it short and focus on the perspective it gave you (and, perhaps, how that relates to your interest in law) that would be a good additional statement.
