Throwing in Name of LS at End of PS

Post by Anonymous User » Mon Oct 19, 2015 11:51 pm

Do y'all think it's better than nothing to add the name of the specific law school with a sentence or two about why you want to attend at the end of your PS? I know people have said that's usually frowned upon, but I don't have room in my PS to add a whole paragraph about the school, and I don't have time to write a "Why X" essay for each, or even most, of the schools I'm applying to. Would it be better not to reference the specific school at all or to give it a sentence or two? Or are those options so bad that I should majorly revise my PS and make room for another paragraph to address the strengths of each school? Thanks for your help!

TLS wisdom seems to say that you're better off writing a why x essay for each school and keeping the PS universal. I know it's a nuisance, but one that's potentially well worth the time. It shouldn't be too hard to tailor them to individual schools.

In my experience (I applied last cycle) the answer is, "it depends." If a school doesn't have a Why X essay, or if they specifically ask to mention why you'd like to attend their school in the PS, then obviously your best bet is to do that. I tailored my personal statement a bit for each school towards the end (the only school I wanted to write a Why X essay for didn't ask for one) and I never wrote a Why X essay. Unsurprisingly, it didn't seem to matter. I got into every school whose medians I was at or above, and was WL or denied from schools I was below.

I'm writing an individual conclusion for each school I'm applying to this application cycle.Sorry if this may not be helpful now, but, I'll let you know how it progresses.

Thank you so much for the advice! :) I will check out if the schools I'm applying to specifically ask for that for the PS or if they ask for a Why X essay.

Oh man, now I'm more confused than ever! None of the schools I'm applying to (that I actually have to be concerned about getting in to) offer a "Why X" essay, and I have read that writing essays that aren't asked for and just attaching them as an addendum is frowned upon! But the schools with a firm 2-page requirement (Harvard for example) are going to force me to whittle down my statement as it is, and way more so if I want to add a paragraph about the school! Ugh, for those schools I think I may resort to adding a sentence or two at the end, or just not mentioning the school at all. :?

Only if the school specifically asks for it. No need to mention a school in the last 2 sentences to appease them. They know why you're applying: It's because of your LSAT/GPA split.
